Spotify Gives Free Users the Power to Pick and Play Songs

Spotify just made its free tier far more appealing. Hot on the heels of launching lossless streaming for paying subscribers, the company is rolling out new on-demand playback tools for free listeners worldwide. The upgrade lets free users search for and play specific songs, or instantly play tracks they discover on social media—big changes from the previous shuffle-only experience with limited skips on mobile.

The new capabilities come under three names:
– Pick & Play: Tap play on any track you want directly in the app.
– Search & Play: Find a specific song via search and start it immediately.
– Share & Play: Open Spotify and play music shared by friends or artists on social platforms, such as tracks posted to Instagram Stories or Notes.

Spotify says these features will reach free users globally, though some limitations will still differentiate the free and Premium experiences. The company also confirmed that certain perks remain exclusive to paid subscribers, including lossless audio, AI Playlists, and Mix. Meanwhile, features like Messages and the personalized daylist continue to be available to both free and Premium users.

Why the shift now? Engagement. Spotify’s ad business has lagged behind company goals, with leadership noting it has been moving too slowly on advertising. The objective is to grow ads to 20% of overall revenue, up from 11% as of June. Giving the free tier more reasons to press play could increase listening time and, in turn, ad impressions.

Free listeners are a massive part of Spotify’s ecosystem. Out of 696 million monthly active users in the most recent quarter, 433 million are on the ad-supported plan, while 276 million pay for Premium. Making the free plan more useful without eroding Premium’s value could be a smart way to grow both ad revenue and future conversions to paid.

What to expect next: the new features are rolling out globally, so availability may hit your app at different times depending on region and device. If you’re on the free tier, keep an eye out for the update—and get ready to play exactly the songs you want, when you want.
