### Sphere Entertainment Unveils Details of the World’s Largest High-Resolution LED Display in Las Vegas Sphere
Sphere Entertainment, in collaboration with Hitachi Vantara, has recently unveiled technological advancements powering the immense LED displays of the Las Vegas Sphere. The Sphere, which is a revolutionary entertainment venue in Las Vegas, boasts interior and exterior LED displays of unprecedented scale and clarity.
Inside the Sphere, visitors can experience a 160,000 square-foot LED display plane, the largest and highest resolution screen ever constructed. The exterior features an equally impressive 580,000 square-foot fully programmable LED surface called the Exosphere. To successfully deliver high-definition immersive content on these vast displays, Sphere Entertainment turned to Hitachi Vantara’s expertise in high-performance data processing software.
Alex Luthwaite, SVP of Show Systems Technology at Sphere Entertainment, discussed the partnership with Hitachi Vantara, emphasizing the fast, reliable, and efficient solution provided for streaming immersive, high-res video content. The collaboration ensures that Sphere’s displays offer visually captivating content, drawing attention from both physical audiences and viewers worldwide via social media.
The Sphere’s technological marvel is showcased through Darren Aronofsky’s original immersive film “Postcard from Earth.” The display system boasts an incredible capacity, managing over 400 gigabytes per second of data with sub 5 milliseconds of latency, providing a stunning 12-bit color display with 444 subsampling.
The behind-the-scenes powerhouse for these displays is Hitachi Vantara’s Hitachi Content Software for File, a robust software-defined, distributed parallel filesystem storage solution. Comprising 27 nodes with 4PB of flash storage, the system plays back content that is streamed in real time to 7thSense media servers, each outputting 4K video at 60 frames per second. This marks a groundbreaking achievement in technological capabilities on such a grand scale.
Octavian Tanase, Chief Product Officer at Hitachi Vantara, spoke about the challenge that the Sphere project presented and how the company rose to meet the technological demands. The project surpassed expectations with unparalleled resolution and color quality.
The same high-performance technology is utilized in the Sphere Studios’ Big Dome, located in Burbank, California. This 28,000 square-foot geodesic dome, outfitted with a quarter-sized replica of the Sphere’s LED screen, serves as a production facility and creative lab for developing original content for Sphere venues.
