This fascinating device gained online attention when Reddit user u/Godlike_Player shared it, showcasing a series of detailed images that confirm its authenticity. The “Sony” and “Xperia” branding are prominently displayed, with a design that closely mirrors the Xperia 1 model. Most notably, the “5G mmWave” logo unveils its identity and hints at its initial showcase origins.
Labelled by the seller as a “Sony Xperia 1s,” this prototype was internally known as the “AG-1” at Sony. It first made headlines during its preview at the Mobile World Congress in 2019. Although specifics were scarce back then, it was known to operate on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset alongside the X50 modem. One of its standout features is its distinctive 21:9 display aspect ratio, a design element that marked the Xperia 1 lineup until the shift to a 19.5:9 ratio in later models.
The extended form factor facilitated the inclusion of specialized mmWave antennas, a bold move by Sony that, however, did not transition into global market availability.
