Sony has confirmed the date for its next Xperia product announcement, and while the company is still keeping the details under wraps, a fresh teaser video is fueling speculation ahead of the May 13 event.
The short clip opens with rock formations sliding and grinding over one another, setting a dramatic tone. Around the 10-second mark, the video highlights three distinct cross-sections, with a fourth shape sitting just behind them. Moments later, the camera pulls back to reveal the “rocks” positioned in a room behind a screen that features three circular cut-outs.
That design isn’t random. The circular cut-outs match what Sony showed in its first teaser and line up with recent leaks pointing to a familiar camera layout on the upcoming flagship. Sony also adds a message telling fans to brace themselves “for a seismic shift,” a clear hint that the biggest changes could be coming to the Xperia 1 VIII camera system.
Leaks from a retailer suggest the Sony Xperia 1 VIII may introduce a new periscope telephoto camera. Reportedly, it will deliver 48MP photos using a 1/1.56-inch optical format and offer 3x optical zoom. If accurate, this would signal a meaningful camera upgrade aimed at sharper zoom shots and improved overall image detail.
Beyond the camera, expectations also point to a 120Hz OLED display for smooth scrolling and gaming, along with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset—one of the most anticipated flagship processors of the year.
With Sony leaning heavily into camera imagery and bold “seismic shift” language, May 13 is shaping up to be an important date for Xperia fans—especially anyone waiting to see how far Sony is pushing mobile photography in the Xperia 1 VIII.
