Sony Introduces Advanced Microsurgery Robot Equipped with 4K 3D Cameras
Sony Group Corporation has announced the development of a cutting-edge microsurgery assistance robot designed to revolutionize the precision and efficiency of surgical procedures on small blood vessels and tissues. This innovative prototype will make its debut at the 2024 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA2024), set to take place in Yokohama, starting May 13.
The pressing issue of an aging society has led to a labor shortage in the medical sector, increasing the demand for advanced technologies to assist overstretched medical practitioners. In response, Sony’s research and development team has focused on creating robotic assistance for microsurgeries to alleviate the workload of surgeons. The robot features an automatic surgical instrument exchange system, allowing for seamless and uninterrupted procedures.
Sony’s breakthrough prototype has been designed to facilitate operations on minute tissues, such as veins and nerves. It replicates the complex movements of a surgeon’s hands and fingers with high precision, ensuring smooth operations akin to human wrist movements. The R&D team has tackled the challenge presented by traditional surgical assistant robots, which require manual exchange of instruments, causing delays. The innovation allows for automatic swapping of miniaturized surgical tools, potentially enabling a broader range of medical professionals to perform intricate microsurgeries.
In February 2024, a successful pilot experiment was conducted at Aichi Medical University. Surgeons and medical practitioners with no specialization in microsurgery utilized the prototype to perform microvascular anastomosis on animal blood vessels with a diameter of about 0.6 mm. This experiment marked a first in the global medical community, demonstrating the feasibility of such a technology in practical applications.
Sony’s future plans include collaborating with university medical departments and medical facilities to enhance and validate the effectiveness of the robotic surgical assistance technology. Sony’s prototype encompasses a highly sensitive control device that accurately translates the fine movements of human fingertips. The surgical instrument tips are equipped with multiple joints, enabling movement that closely mimics the fluidity of a human wrist, ensuring precise and unobtrusive operation.
3. Utilization of High-Definition 4K Imaging Technology
The robot includes 1.3-type 4K OLED Microdisplays, providing surgeons with clear, high-resolution imagery of the surgical area. These displays assist in operations by faithfully reproducing color, texture, and depth, offering visual support for detailed surgical work.
Sony emphasizes that the surgical assistant robot is currently undergoing development and has yet to receive official approval under Japan’s regulations concerning medical devices. It’s important to note that the device is not yet available for sale or use in medical procedures.
