Sony Stands Firm on Ending Physical Game Discs in 2028 Despite Growing Backlash
Sony has finally addressed the growing criticism surrounding its decision to phase out physical game discs beginning in January 2028. After weeks of silence, the company responded during its FY26 Q1 earnings call, where executives were questioned about the move and its potential effect on the PlayStation business.
According to Sony’s chief financial officer Lin Tao, the company believes the transition away from physical discs will not have a negative impact on revenue. Tao explained that digital content adoption has grown significantly, and Sony carefully considered the shift before deciding to move forward.
When asked about how the end of physical game discs could affect sales leading up to 2028, Tao indicated that Sony plans to proceed cautiously. However, the company appears confident that the gaming market has already moved heavily toward digital purchases.
Tao also addressed concerns about future revenue once the policy takes effect. She stated that Sony has not seen any business impact so far and suggested that the company does not expect major disruption when the change officially begins. Since a large portion of game sales already comes from digital downloads, Sony seems to believe the loss of physical discs will not significantly hurt its bottom line.
The decision has sparked strong reactions among players, collectors, and preservation advocates. Many gamers argue that physical discs give consumers more ownership, allow used game sales, support game preservation, and provide access for people with limited internet connectivity. Others worry that a fully digital future could give platform holders more control over pricing, availability, and access.
The backlash has continued to grow, with the “Don’t Kill the Disc” petition reportedly surpassing 350,000 signatures. Some players have also discussed boycotting Sony products in response to the company’s direction.
Despite the criticism, Sony does not appear ready to reverse course. Tao acknowledged that the company needs to consider how to respond to customer feedback, but the overall message from the earnings call was clear: Sony remains committed to its digital-first strategy.
For now, the company seems focused on the numbers. With digital game sales already dominating the market, Sony appears confident that ending physical discs in 2028 will not damage its business. Still, the reaction from the gaming community shows that the debate over physical versus digital games is far from over.
