Sonos has initiated the new year with a significant leadership change, as CEO Patrick Spence has resigned from his position effective immediately, following a challenging year for the company in 2024. Despite introducing innovative products like their first-ever headphones, Sonos struggled, largely due to a revamped mobile app that did not meet users’ expectations. The new app, launched in May 2024, was intended to be an improvement but unfortunately lacked crucial features the previous version offered.
The news of Spence’s departure was officially confirmed by Sonos, including his step down from the board of directors. The company is now actively searching for a new CEO, and in the interim, Tom Conrad, an independent board member since 2017, has been appointed as the temporary head. Conrad brings valuable expertise from his role as Chief Product Officer at Quibi and leadership positions at Snap Inc. and Pandora.
While Spence will transition out of his executive role, he will continue to offer strategic advisory services to the company until the end of June, after which he is set to receive a severance package.
Despite these leadership changes, Sonos has no intention of reverting back to the previous app version. The company is also moving forward with upcoming product plans, including a rumored streaming device. In a message to employees, interim CEO Conrad expressed his commitment not only to steady the company’s current course but also to expand the Sonos platform, aiming for a brighter future.
