Social Media Platform Initiates Sweep to Remove Bots, Users May See Follower Drop

Social media users might notice a decline in their follower counts as a popular platform embarks on a campaign to cleanse the network of spam and bot accounts. An announcement from the platform’s Safety team indicated that starting on Thursday, they will engage in a “significant, proactive initiative” to purge accounts that breach the platform’s guidelines concerning manipulation and spam.

The cleanup campaign arises soon after the platform declared the induction of two new executives into its safety division: Kylie McRoberts, who has been promoted to Head of Safety, and Yale Cohen, coming from Publicis Media, who will take over as the Head of Brand Safety and Advertiser Solutions.

Battling spam is a challenge that the current CEO has expressed a strong desire to address, making it a focal point for future endeavors. Despite the endeavor to counter spam, it’s been an arduous task, compounded by significant layoffs that have left the Trust and Safety team understaffed. Additionally, the role of Head of Safety remained unoccupied for nearly a year following previous exits during Elon Musk’s leadership.

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies has further complicated the crackdown on spam. Reports have surfaced of bots, some of which are seemingly verified, using the platform to disseminate spam messages. For instance, verified accounts were caught sending out templated responses suggestive of automated replies rather than human interaction.

Additionally, there have been reports of a surge in spam promoting adult content, with explicit responses directing users to links in the spam accounts’ bios.

The magnitude of spam on the network has been a contentious issue, especially noted during the CEO’s attempted retraction from a $44 billion acquisition, citing the platform’s transparency regarding bot numbers. Currently, the CEO is highlighting how the social media service is experiencing high user traffic but has not made clear whether these statistics differentiate between legitimate users and bots.

As per the Safety team’s disclosure, the platform intends to employ a comprehensive strategy to combat the presence of spammers and bots. This rigorous action is likely to lead to some genuine accounts experiencing follower count discrepancies.

To address any unintended effects on legitimate users, the platform has provided an appeal process through a dedicated form available for those who believe their account has been unfairly affected by the bot and spam sweep.

Users of this social platform should prepare for potential changes in their follower metrics as this sweep to secure a more authentic and safe user experience unfolds.
