Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme crushes Intel and AMD rivals in AI PC performance tests
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme is already regarded as one of the most powerful chips built for next-generation AI PCs, but fresh benchmark testing suggests its lead may be larger than many expected. In recent performance comparisons, the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme X2E-96-100 pulled far ahead of Intel’s Core Ultra X9 388H and AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 465, especially in AI workloads and multi-threaded CPU performance.
The results highlight a major shift in the Windows laptop chip market, where raw CPU speed is no longer the only deciding factor. With AI features becoming a key selling point for premium laptops, NPU performance, battery efficiency, and real-world benchmark results are now just as important as clock speeds and core counts.
The Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme X2E-96-100 is built with 18 CPU cores, including 12 Oryon Prime cores and 6 Oryon Performance cores. It can reach up to 5.0GHz and includes the Adreno X2-90 GPU. For AI processing, Qualcomm equips the chip with a Hexagon NPU rated at 80 TOPS, paired with 48GB of LPDDR5X memory in the tested system.
Intel’s Core Ultra X9 388H, by comparison, features 16 CPU cores in a 4P, 8E, and 4LPE layout, with a maximum clock speed of 5.1GHz. It includes Arc graphics with 12 Xe3 cores and Intel’s NPU 5, which is rated at 50 TOPS. The tested laptop came with 32GB of LPDDR5X memory.
AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 465 comes with 10 CPU cores, including 4 Zen 5 cores and 6 Zen 5c cores, with a maximum frequency of 5.0GHz. Its XDNA 2 NPU is also rated at 50 TOPS, and the tested configuration included 32GB of LPDDR5X memory.
On paper, all three chips look like serious contenders for the AI laptop market. But measured performance tells a different story.
In Geekbench 7, the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme was up to 53 percent faster than the Intel Core Ultra X9 388H and up to 83 percent faster than the AMD Ryzen AI 9 465. That is a significant gap, particularly in a market where buyers often compare premium laptops based on small performance differences.
The advantage became even more dramatic in Cinebench 2026 multi-threaded rendering. In that test, the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme was reported to be up to 87 percent faster than both competing chips. For creators, professionals, and power users who rely on rendering, compiling, multitasking, or other demanding workloads, that kind of lead could make a major difference in daily use.
AI performance was where Qualcomm’s chip appeared most dominant. In Procyon AI Computer Vision testing, the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme delivered nearly twice the performance of Intel’s Core Ultra X9 388H and roughly 2.4 times the performance of AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 465.
That result is especially important because AI PC marketing often focuses heavily on TOPS ratings. While TOPS can be useful for comparing theoretical NPU capability, real-world benchmark performance gives buyers a clearer idea of what they can actually expect from a laptop. In this case, Qualcomm’s 80 TOPS Hexagon NPU appears to translate into a large practical advantage over 50 TOPS-class competitors.
Battery performance may be the most eye-catching part of the comparison. The Snapdragon-powered laptop reportedly outperformed the Intel system in every CPU and AI benchmark while running on battery in Balanced mode, even when the Intel laptop was plugged in and set to Best Performance mode.
That finding is a strong reminder of why power efficiency matters so much in modern laptops. A chip that can deliver high performance without needing to be plugged in has a clear advantage for students, travelers, remote workers, creators, and business users who need reliable speed away from a desk.
Pricing also strengthens Qualcomm’s position. Systems powered by the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme reportedly start at around $1,699, while the compared Intel system was priced at about $2,299. Based on the test results, Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme laptops may offer roughly twice the performance per dollar of the Intel model, and up to 2.6 times the performance per dollar in AI workloads.
That value argument could be a major problem for Intel and AMD in the premium AI PC category. If Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme laptops can deliver stronger CPU performance, much faster AI processing, better battery-mode results, and a lower starting price, they may become an increasingly attractive option for buyers looking for a high-end Windows laptop.
The results also show how quickly the AI PC race is evolving. Intel and AMD have both invested heavily in NPU-equipped processors, but Qualcomm’s latest chip appears to be pushing the competition harder than ever. With AI-assisted productivity tools, on-device image processing, video enhancement, language models, and creative applications becoming more common, NPU performance could soon influence laptop buying decisions as much as CPU and GPU performance.
For now, the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme looks like one of the strongest AI PC chips available. Its combination of high multi-core performance, leading AI benchmark results, strong battery-mode efficiency, and competitive pricing gives it a clear edge in these tests.
If these results reflect the broader laptop market, Qualcomm may have a serious opportunity to challenge Intel and AMD in premium Windows PCs. The Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme is not just competing; in several key areas, it appears to be setting the pace.
