SK Hynix, a major South Korean semiconductor company and a key player in AI memory chips, has removed its four-year college degree requirement for new hires in its latest recruitment campaign.

That means applicants with junior college backgrounds, vocational education, or even high school diplomas can now apply for a wider range of roles at the company, including positions beyond traditional factory or production-line work. In a sector long dominated by candidates with formal university credentials, this marks a significant shift.

Rather than focusing only on diplomas, the company is placing more emphasis on qualities it describes as key “muscles” for the AI era. These include thinking ability, adaptability, and empathy.

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has also highlighted the kinds of skills that may become more valuable in the workplace of the future. According to his view, companies will need people who can identify the root of a problem, ask better questions, recover from failure, show human empathy, and develop practical “body skills” through experiences such as music, art, and sports.

In other words, SK Hynix is not simply lowering the bar. It is changing what the bar measures.

The company still plans to keep its standard hiring process, including the SK Competency Test and interviews, whether conducted online or in person. What changes is the weight placed on a candidate’s background. A prestigious degree may still help, but it will no longer be the automatic gatekeeper it once was.

This could become a turning point for the broader tech industry. For years, major technology companies have discussed skills-based hiring, but many high-level roles still quietly favored candidates from traditional academic tracks. SK Hynix’s decision shows that the pressure of AI innovation may be pushing employers to act faster.
