Tesla is gearing up to revolutionize the bustling family SUV market by introducing a new 6-seat variant of their popular Model Y, known as the Juniper version. Production for this exciting addition is slated to kick off at the Gigafactory in Shanghai in late 2025.
This development follows hot on the heels of rumors swirling last week about Tesla’s plans to unveil a larger, 7-seat Model Y for the Chinese market. While this latest scoop hints at a 6-seat configuration, it doesn’t necessarily exclude the possibility of a 7-seat model. In fact, offering both options might be a strategic move to cater to diverse family needs.
According to insiders in the supply chain, Tesla has already alerted its suppliers to brace for a significant ramp-up in Model Y production next year. A standard 5-seat Model Y Juniper is expected to hit the market in the first quarter, with the more spacious variant following in the fourth quarter.
Currently, Tesla’s 7-seat Model Y features two somewhat cramped, foldable seats in the trunk. This setup has been criticized for its limited space, suggesting that Tesla might either scale up the vehicle’s dimensions or reconfigure the interior layout to accommodate six full-size seats. The latter could be a more cost-effective approach, aligning with the Juniper refresh’s goal of maximizing efficiency and affordability. China’s SUV market is replete with examples of family-friendly vehicles boasting multiple seats and ample storage. For instance, the M4 Yacht Forthing model, which offers a hybrid 6-seater configuration, has gained popularity. It features three rows of seating, including a collapsible third row that’s designed to fit small children comfortably. A similar design strategy could be in store for the Model Y Juniper, potentially enhancing its appeal in China.
Moreover, Tesla has future plans beyond the 2025 Model Y lineup. Reports indicate that a smaller, more compact Juniper version, possibly the long-awaited mass-market Model 2, will debut in 2026. This would allow Tesla to leverage the new Juniper design philosophy across various sizes and models, expanding their market reach.
