Silent Hill f, the much-anticipated addition to Konami’s legendary horror series, initially considered setting its eerie tale in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture with its breathtaking view of Mount Fuji. The choice seemed perfect since Shizuoka translates to “Quiet Hill” or “Silent Hill.” Despite this ideal connection, the game will instead unfold in a fictional town inspired by Kanayama in Gifu Prefecture.
In an Anime Expo 2025 interview, acclaimed author Ryukishi07 revealed why they chose to bypass Mount Fuji’s picturesque setting. The towering presence of the mountain, they felt, could detract from the signature fog-laden atmosphere that fans expect and love. “When creating the story, we needed all team members to share a common understanding of the setting,” Ryukishi07 noted. Using real locations as the foundation was key, and initially, the team scouted Shizuoka. However, the grandeur of Mount Fuji became a concern.
After exploring other locations, the grid-like townscape of Kanayama caught their attention. Ryukishi07 suggested this alternative as it offered a unique shape that aligned better with their vision.
Composer Akira Yamaoka also brought a fresh approach, steering away from the expected “Japanese style” and delving into deeper cultural rhythms. The game’s aesthetic cleverly nods to the Showa era, adding another layer of authenticity and intrigue.
Set in 1960s Japan, Silent Hill f tells the chilling story of high schooler Shimizu Hinaoka, whose town is engulfed in an unsettling fog. With development by NeoBards, the game promises a more action-oriented experience than its predecessors. Mark your calendars: Silent Hill f is slated for release on September 25, 2025, for Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, and PC.
