Seiko is preparing to launch four new compact rectangular solar watches in Japan this November, and they are likely to catch the attention of anyone who enjoys slim dress watches with vintage-inspired proportions. The new models, identified as HFJ001P, HFJ002P, HFJ003P, and HFJ004P, join the Seiko Selection lineup with a clean two-hand design, solar charging, and a case size that is impressively small by modern standards.
Each watch measures just 27.4 mm in length, 18 mm in width, and 5.9 mm in thickness. That makes the new Seiko HFJ series notably compact, even compared with well-known rectangular dress watches such as the Cartier Tank Must small model. The result is a refined, understated wristwatch that leans into classic elegance rather than oversized wrist presence.
The slim case is made possible by Seiko’s V115 solar quartz movement. This movement is designed specifically for small watches, with an oblong shape measuring 11.8 x 15.5 mm and only 2.09 mm thick. It powers a simple two-hand layout with no seconds hand and no date window, keeping the dial balanced and minimal.
Solar charging is one of the biggest advantages of these watches. Small quartz watches often require tiny batteries that need replacing every few years, which can be inconvenient in a compact case. With the V115 solar movement, Seiko eliminates that routine battery-change hassle. Once fully charged, the watch can run for about 12 months, and it also includes overcharge protection. Accuracy is rated at approximately plus or minus 15 seconds per month.
The design is classic and dressy across all four versions. Each dial features printed Roman numerals placed inside a finely lined rectangular border, giving the watches a refined vintage character. The absence of a seconds hand adds to the calm, formal look, making these models suitable for everyday wear, office use, and more dressed-up occasions.
The HFJ001P comes with a stainless steel bracelet and a white dial. The HFJ002P offers a similar bracelet design but with a gold-tone finish. The HFJ003P features a rose-gold-tone case paired with a brown cowhide leather strap, while the HFJ004P combines a gold-tone case, black dial, and black cowhide strap for a more dramatic appearance.
The bracelet models use a one-push triple-fold clasp, while the leather strap versions offer a more traditional dress-watch feel. All four watches are rated as magnetic resistant, adding a practical touch to their elegant design.
As expected at this price level, Seiko uses Hardlex crystal rather than sapphire. Water resistance is listed for daily-life use only, so these watches are better suited to light exposure such as handwashing rather than swimming or showering. Given their thin dress-watch profile, that limitation is not surprising.
Pricing in Japan starts at 35,200 yen for the leather-strap models, which is roughly $223. The stainless steel bracelet HFJ001P is priced at 38,500 yen, or about $244, while the gold-tone bracelet HFJ002P costs 41,800 yen, around $264. In simple terms, choosing a bracelet adds 3,300 yen over leather, and opting for the gold-tone bracelet version adds another 3,300 yen.
There is one important limitation: Seiko lists all four models as shop-only releases. That means they are not expected to be sold through Seiko’s official online store. Buyers interested in the HFJ001P, HFJ002P, HFJ003P, or HFJ004P may need to visit participating retailers in Japan or look for availability through other watch sellers after launch.
With their ultra-thin rectangular cases, solar-powered convenience, and accessible pricing, the new Seiko HFJ solar watches could become appealing options for fans of compact dress watches. They combine classic styling with modern low-maintenance practicality, making them especially interesting for anyone who wants a small rectangular watch without the cost or upkeep of a luxury mechanical model.
