Samsung officially unveils its Galaxy Z TriFold

Samsung’s Next Tri-Fold Galaxy Could Embrace a Wider, Tablet-Like Design

Samsung may have stopped producing its triple-folding Galaxy Z TriFold, but the idea of a three-panel foldable doesn’t appear to be dead. In fact, new patent discoveries suggest the company is already exploring what could come next—and the next evolution may look very different from the original.

Recent Samsung patents point to a potential successor that adopts a wider, “passport-like” design. This broader form factor is quickly becoming a major trend in premium smartphone design, and it’s being positioned as the style many brands are racing toward. If Samsung goes this route, a future triple-fold device could feel more like a compact tablet when opened, while still folding down into something you can carry more easily than a standard slate-style foldable.

Earlier expectations around a Galaxy Z TriFold 2 have centered on a big mechanical upgrade: a more refined hinge system designed to be lighter and thinner. That kind of hinge improvement is critical for triple-fold phones, where durability and thickness can make or break the user experience. With a slimmer hinge, Samsung could reduce bulk and improve how the device feels in hand—two of the biggest challenges for multi-fold designs.

The patents go further, hinting at a wide triple-fold concept that includes a thick frame, side-mounted buttons, and a triple-camera system on the rear. One of the more interesting ideas shown is a “tent” style triangular position. This could be especially useful for hands-free video watching, turning the foldable into its own stand without needing accessories. There’s also a mention of using this stance as a passive display mode, where the device could show widgets and notifications in a smart display-like setup—similar to having a small hub screen on your desk.

While patent images don’t guarantee a commercial release, they do give clues about where Samsung’s foldable strategy could be headed. And before a wide-format triple-fold ever reaches stores, Samsung’s first real step into this broader design direction may arrive through a different product.

That stepping stone is expected to be a “Wide” version of the Galaxy Z Fold line. Reports suggest an upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide could feature a 5.4-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch internal screen. Other rumored highlights include a larger 5,000mAh battery and a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, pointing to a device aimed at power users who want both productivity and premium performance in a foldable form.

Taken together, these details paint a clear picture: even if the original Galaxy Z TriFold has been discontinued, Samsung is still actively experimenting with new foldable formats. If the company can successfully combine a thinner hinge, a wider body, and practical modes like tent viewing and smart display behavior, the next generation of foldables could be a lot more useful—and a lot more appealing to mainstream buyers.
