Apple has recently unveiled the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series, but the reception has been mixed. The much-anticipated Apple Intelligence feature is conspicuously absent from this series. In terms of hardware updates, the changes reflect a trend of steady evolution rather than groundbreaking innovation, a pattern we’ve seen in recent iPhone releases.
On the bright side, Apple has introduced larger batteries across the new lineup and claims significant improvements in battery life. The company boasts that the iPhone 16 Pro Max delivers four additional hours of video playback compared to its predecessor, while the standard iPhone 16 offers an extra two hours.
However, understanding real-world battery performance requires practical testing. Arun Maini, known for his MrWhosetheboss YouTube channel, conducted an extensive battery life test. His methodology aimed to mimic everyday usage, incorporating tasks like using popular apps, social media, YouTube, and Slack. His test lineup featured the iPhone 16 series, several iPhone 15 models, and a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which represents the pinnacle of Android phones.
The results were quite revealing:
– Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: 12 hours 31 minutes
– iPhone 16 Pro Max: 11 hours 22 minutes
– iPhone 15 Pro Max: 9 hours 35 minutes
– iPhone 16 Plus: 8 hours 45 minutes
– iPhone 16 Pro: 8 hours 19 minutes
– iPhone 16: 8 hours 19 minutes
– iPhone 15: 7 hours 45 minutes
The Galaxy S24 Ultra, equipped with its robust 5,000 mAh battery, unsurprisingly led the pack. The iPhone 16 models did show a notable improvement over their predecessors, but despite Apple’s advancements in efficiency and battery capacity, they couldn’t surpass Samsung’s flagship in 2024.
While none of the new iPhone results are disappointing, it’s fascinating to observe that even with their enhancements, the iPhone 16 series falls slightly short of Samsung’s top offering. The competition in the smartphone world remains fierce, and it’s clear that both companies are making strides in pushing the boundaries of battery performance.
