Samsung has introduced a notable change in its software update policy, extending it to its upper mid-range smartphone segment. However, this new commitment kicks off with the Galaxy S24 FE, leaving its predecessors such as the Galaxy S23 FE in the lurch.
Recently unveiled, the Galaxy S24 FE joins the Galaxy S Fan Edition (FE) lineup as its fourth member. Unlike previous launches, the S24 FE debuted alongside the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra, not with other new FE products. The Galaxy S25 series, including the highly anticipated Galaxy S25 Ultra, is still on the horizon for early next year.
Despite sharing many features with its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 FE, such as similar camera hardware and a 1080p 120 Hz AMOLED display, there’s one significant upgrade in the S24 FE: its software support. The S24 FE promises extended software longevity that outshines that of the S23 FE.
The Galaxy S23 FE came with the promise of four OS updates, ensuring it remains current until Android 17, starting from its pre-installed One UI 5 based on Android 13. Security patch updates for the S23 FE are expected until at least October 2028.
In a significant enhancement, Samsung has pledged that the Galaxy S24 FE will receive seven major OS updates. Starting with Android 14 and One UI 6.1, this commitment suggests the S24 FE will be current up to Android 21 and One UI 13. Moreover, Samsung will provide two additional years of security updates, closely aligning its update strategy for security patches with its OS updates.
While the Galaxy S24 FE shares numerous hardware traits with the S23 FE, this extended software support marks a notable leap forward, ensuring the device remains up-to-date for years to come. This advancement signifies Samsung’s strengthening commitment to providing long-term support for its devices, extending beyond flagship models to the upper mid-range segment.
