Ryzen 7 9800X3D Running Too Hot? A Simple BIOS Update Might Be the Fix

BIOS Update May Lower Ryzen 7 9800X3D Temperatures and Reduce Thermal Throttling

AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D is one of the most popular gaming CPUs on the market, but like many modern Ryzen X3D processors, it can run hot under heavy workloads. Seeing temperatures close to 95°C is not always unusual for AMD Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 series chips, especially models with 3D V-Cache. AMD generally considers operation near the maximum rated temperature to be within normal behavior, provided the processor is maintaining expected performance.

However, not every high-temperature case is harmless. Some users have reported thermal throttling on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, where the CPU reduces performance to keep temperatures under control. In one recent case, a user claimed that a simple BIOS update lowered full-load temperatures from 95°C to 86°C, ending a throttling issue that had reportedly persisted for more than a year.

According to the user, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D would constantly hit 95°C under full load, regardless of cooling changes. The system was using an MSI X870 Tomahawk motherboard, and the user had already tried reinstalling the CPU cooler multiple times. They also changed the cooler entirely, but the high temperatures remained.

This type of report is not isolated. Other Ryzen 7 9800X3D owners have described similar experiences, including cases where even a 360mm AIO liquid cooler did not prevent the CPU from reaching 95°C. Some users have also claimed that their processor reached these temperatures during gaming, even when CPU usage was not at 100%.

In this particular case, the solution was surprisingly simple: updating the motherboard BIOS to the latest version. After the BIOS update, the CPU reportedly dropped from 95°C to 86°C while operating at the same 130W power level. That 9°C reduction is significant, especially for users dealing with thermal throttling or aggressive fan noise.

While this result suggests that a BIOS issue may have been involved, there is currently no official confirmation that a widespread Ryzen 7 9800X3D temperature bug exists. It is also possible that the newer BIOS improved voltage behavior, power management, boost behavior, sensor handling, or motherboard-level CPU tuning.

Still, the case is a useful reminder for PC builders and Ryzen users. If a Ryzen 7 9800X3D is constantly hitting 95°C and throttling despite proper cooler mounting, good thermal paste application, strong airflow, and a capable cooling solution, checking for a BIOS update should be one of the first troubleshooting steps.

Motherboard manufacturers often release BIOS updates that improve CPU stability, memory compatibility, power delivery behavior, and thermal management. AMD and its motherboard partners have also recommended BIOS updates in the past to address platform stability concerns.

For Ryzen 7 9800X3D owners, high temperatures alone do not always mean something is wrong. These chips are designed to boost aggressively and may run close to their thermal limit under demanding workloads. But if performance is dropping, clocks are falling, or the system is throttling heavily, updating the BIOS could be a simple fix worth trying before replacing hardware.

In short, Ryzen 7 9800X3D temperatures near 95°C can be normal in some scenarios, but they should not automatically be ignored. A BIOS update may not solve every thermal problem, but for some users, it could make a meaningful difference in CPU temperature, stability, and overall performance.
