Apple is gearing up to launch an innovative tabletop robot in 2027, poised to redefine how we interact with AI. This upcoming device features a 7-inch display, reminiscent of an iPad, mounted on a flexible arm. Designed to elevate Siri into a more interactive companion, this robot promises an engaging AI experience that feels almost human. Although Siri is currently at the introductory level, Apple is working to enhance its capabilities, striving to match competitors like Google Assistant and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The robot’s versatile arm can rotate and extend nearly six inches in any direction, allowing it to adjust its position and face the user. This flexibility is expected to make conversations more natural and intuitive. Internally nicknamed the “Pixar Lamp,” it aims to mimic a person in the room, capable of genuine interactions like discussing travel plans or recommending local restaurants. This type of dynamic response is reminiscent of OpenAI’s voice features, promising a more enriched user experience.
To boost its conversational ability, Apple is crafting a new version of Siri tailored for this robot. This upgraded Siri will retain information, enabling it to engage in more fluid and personal exchanges. The AI is also set to have a “visual personality,” with Apple experimenting with an animated version of the Finder logo as a stand-in for Siri’s “face.” The goal is to create interactions that feel lively and authentic, integrating emotional responses for a human-like touch.
Beyond mere conversation, the robot will support FaceTime calls with a feature similar to Center Stage, tracking movement and following individuals during video chats. Users can also manipulate the display with a joystick, allowing them to explore different perspectives in the room during calls. Additionally, Apple is working on a mobile robot fitted with wheels and a mechanical arm, intended for industrial settings like factories or retail environments.
The mobile robot’s purpose contrasts with its tabletop counterpart, highlighting Apple’s diverse approach to robotics and AI. By pioneering these technologies, Apple aims to lead the charge in personal AI innovation, providing devices that not only perform tasks but also engage users in a meaningful way. As the 2027 launch approaches, we can expect to learn more about these groundbreaking developments, signaling an exciting future for AI integration in everyday life.
