Nightdive Studios and id Software have breathed new life into their iconic first-person shooters, Heretic and Hexen, with freshly remastered versions bundled as Heretic + Hexen. These enhanced classics are now available on a wide range of platforms including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, all for an enticing price of $14.99. Excitingly, two brand-new original episodes are part of this package.
The announcement came during QuakeCon’s welcome stream on August 7, 2025, featuring insights from id Software’s Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin. If you’re a Game Pass member, you’re in luck; you can access the game on Xbox and PC.
With support for up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS on suitable hardware, the bundle boasts revamped textures and an optional remixed soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, known for his work on Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods.
Gamers can enjoy local split-screen options, perfect for co-op or deathmatch modes, supporting between 4 to 8 players depending on your platform, and revel in online cross-platform multiplayer with up to 16 players. For those who love customization, the remaster also offers mod support using in-game tools.
Adding to the excitement are two new episodes: Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur, co-developed by Nightdive and id Software. Describing the remastering process, Nightdive Studios’ Matthew Tropiano emphasized balancing new enhancements with the preservation of classic elements. The team introduced fresh textures for Heretic and focused on gameplay improvements for Hexen.
Nightdive is celebrated for its expertise in revitalizing retro games, having previously worked on titles like The Thing: Remastered and System Shock 2.
Originally released in the mid-90s, Heretic and its sequel Hexen captivated gamers with their sci-fi gothic settings, medieval weaponry, and magical spells. Built on an evolved Doom engine, Heretic was ahead of its time with features like inventory management and vertical aiming, while Hexen expanded these innovations with hub-based levels and diverse character classes such as mage, fighter, and cleric.
These beloved games are back, ready for both long-time fans and new players to enjoy on modern platforms. Whether you’re reliving nostalgia or discovering these adventures for the first time, Heretic + Hexen promises a compelling gaming experience.
