A SEGA Game Gear has been transformed into a modern marvel by YouTuber Macho Nacho Productions, breathing new life into this classic ’90s handheld device. This impressive makeover includes USB-C charging, a vibrant HD screen, and a custom audio board equipped with stereo speakers.
Tito Perez, the creative mind behind this project, sourced a Game Gear motherboard from eBay. With skillful use of a de-soldering gun, he salvaged crucial components like the CPU, link port, and cartridge reader. These were reattached to a reverse-engineered motherboard designed by the European modding group SYF, overcoming the original’s low-quality capacitors and potential unsalvageability. The SYF board adds a region toggle switch, allowing seamless switching between North American and Japanese settings.
For the display, Tito chose a BennVenn GGHD (rev 3) LCD kit, offering a crisp 640 x 480 IPS screen with added features like scan lines, scaling modes, and HDMI support. This upgrade transcends the original Game Gear’s 3.2-inch backlit LCD, which only displayed 32 colors and suffered from poor contrast.
One of the standout enhancements is in the audio and battery department. The original mono audio chip was swapped out for SYF’s custom board, paired with dual aftermarket speakers for stereo sound. The power system was upgraded from six power-hungry AA batteries to two 2,000 mAh lithium-ion batteries, chargeable via USB-C, with LED indicators showing charging status.
All these components are housed in a Retro Gear Customs shell with a sleek matte gray finish, accented by a custom orange start button and Japanese Kanji, adding a touch of unique flair.
Launched in Japan on October 6, 1990, the SEGA Game Gear sold 40,000 units in its first two days and achieved 10.62 million sales globally by 1996. Despite these numbers, it struggled against the Nintendo Game Boy due to capacitor failures and battery challenges, eventually being discontinued in 1997 after nearly 11 million units sold.
Projects like Tito’s offer a glimpse into what might have been if SEGA had continued innovating with the Game Gear. It’s a fascinating blend of nostalgia and cutting-edge technology, reviving a beloved console and firing up the imagination of gaming enthusiasts once more.
