The handheld gaming arena has been bustling with a plethora of new entrants, each vying for the attention of gaming enthusiasts. Among these contenders is the Sjgam M20 Pro, recently unveiled by Retro Handhelds. This device, though intriguing at first glance due to its sizeable 7-inch display and detachable controllers, draws heavy inspiration from the iconic Nintendo Switch. As Nintendo gears up for the sequel to its hit console, the M20 Pro’s resemblance raises eyebrows and questions about its uniqueness in a thriving market.
The Sjgam M20 Pro showcases a 7-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, offering a large viewing area typical of modern handhelds. However, this comes at the cost of resolution, which feels a tad outdated when compared to newer models. Under its hood, the console is powered by a Rockchip RK3566 processor paired with a Mali-G52 GPU. While this hardware setup manages to handle older game formats adequately, it might struggle with more demanding emulators, such as those for PSP and N64.
Storage and memory are simplistic, with 4GB of DDR4 RAM and expandable storage support up to 128GB via a TF card slot. Unfortunately, the console’s base model comes with just 8GB of internal storage. It runs on the EmuELEC 4.3 OS, a Linux-based system supporting over 30 different emulators, which means avid retro gamers can enjoy titles from platforms like PS1, PSP, and N64.
The design draws clear parallels to the Nintendo Switch, emphasizing detachable controllers and a TV dock via HDMI connectivity. Alongside the basic package, users will find light guns and additional gamepads reminiscent of Sony’s PS5 DualSense controller. However, the build quality of these accessories leaves room for doubt regarding their long-term durability and functionality, varying according to personal taste.
With a 4000mAh battery, the M20 Pro aims to provide ample gaming time, yet its blend of adequate emulator support and average hardware specs might not be enough to make a significant mark in the current landscape. To retro gaming aficionados on a tight budget, the Sjgam M20 Pro offers a reasonable choice but may struggle to carve out a strong identity in an increasingly crowded field.
