Napkin is a note-taking app that is not about making you more productive

Rethink Note-Taking: Meet Napkin, the App That Prioritizes Reflection Over Productivity

Note-taking apps are designed to boost your efficiency and productivity, helping you quickly jot down and better organize your thoughts. However, Napkin, a unique app with the same name as an Accel-backed startup, aims to differentiate itself by infusing mindfulness into the note-taking process. Imagine it as a thoughtful companion that enriches your journaling experience.

Developers David Felsmann and Fabian Wittel, former members of BMW’s group innovation team, embarked on the Napkin journey in 2022. Initially, a web prototype was launched, focusing on productivity and aiding users in outlining ideas on specific topics. However, they discovered a significant portion of users utilized Napkin as a mindfulness tool, taking moments to reflect on meaningful ideas.

This revelation prompted the company to pivot towards the mindfulness market, particularly when developing their iOS app, while still maintaining the desktop version for existing users. Napkin is now placed in the health and fitness category, emphasizing its mindfulness approach over traditional productivity or utility functions.

The essence of Napkin lies in helping users capture and reflect on ideas that change their state of mind. Whether it’s a motivating quote or a perspective-shifting thought, Napkin encourages the collection of such insights as a mindfulness habit.

Users can log their ideas using the camera to capture quotes from books, which are then converted into text, or simply by typing out their thoughts. To smooth the process, Napkin curates initial sessions with suggested ideas you can add to your library. Leveraging AI, the app categorizes these ideas with auto-generated tags, making it easy to revisit themes later from the home screen.

Additionally, users can archive ideas, removing them from the active list while keeping them accessible. Although Napkin supports languages like Spanish and German, it currently performs best in English.

One notable usage pattern is that many users start their day by using Napkin instead of diving into social media, engaging in self-reflection first thing in the morning. The app is built around a Sense of Coherence (SoC) model, helping users create a holistic mental model of the world, fostering grounding and clarity.

Napkin is available on the App Store, with a subscription fee of $6 per month or $50 per year, and includes a seven-day trial period. In a bid to preserve user flow and avoid distractions, Napkin steers clear of sending nudges or notifications. The goal is to be a quiet, background application that retains your attention rather than clamoring for it.

Positioning itself as a journaling companion rather than a replacement, Napkin envisions potential future integrations with popular journaling apps and platforms like Amazon Kindle, allowing users to seamlessly capture and utilize their ideas.

Napkin has secured approximately $150,000 through convertible loan agreements from supporters and backers, choosing not to pursue institutional funding. Instead, the company aims to achieve sustainability with over 10,000 subscribers before expanding with new features and additional platform support. Currently, Napkin boasts around 4,000 paid users, steadily working towards its growth goals.
