Meta’s smart glasses have captured attention for their stylish yet functional design, appealing greatly to the younger demographic. With integrated cameras and an interactive hands-free experience, these wearables stand out. However, recent activities by two Harvard students have thrust them into the spotlight for less commendable reasons, sparking an ongoing debate about privacy in the digital age.
These students have equipped Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses with a facial recognition system capable of identifying strangers in public. Dubbed I-XRAY, this system can potentially disclose sensitive personal information, such as phone numbers and addresses, with just a glance at an individual. This technological feat has been primarily made possible by the powerful PimEyes facial recognition software, which is known for its extensive reach across the internet.
The process begins when the smart glasses stream visual data directly to Instagram. An AI program scans the feed, detects a face, and subsequently scours the web for more images of the identified person. This allows the system to piece together names, contact details, and even personal affiliations from various online sources like articles and voter databases.
AnhPhu Nguyen, one of the developers, demonstrated how easily they accessed the personal data of numerous Harvard students, unbeknownst to those individuals. This groundbreaking, albeit controversial project has not only drawn public attention but also prompted a response from Meta. The company clarified that the capabilities of PimEyes could be utilized with any camera-equipped hardware and aren’t exclusive to their smart glasses.
The choice of Meta’s glasses was strategic. Their inconspicuous design mimics regular eyewear, helping users blend in without drawing attention, thereby facilitating the discreet gathering of information. Additionally, their relatively affordable price of $300 makes them accessible for such experimental ventures.
The implications of using facial recognition technology in this manner raise significant privacy concerns. As these students have highlighted, individuals can take steps to protect their personal information by contacting data brokers, opting out from search index databases, and requesting the removal of their data.
