With anticipation building in the gaming community, Qualcomm has shed light on the gaming capabilities of its forthcoming Snapdragon X Elite notebooks at the Game Developers Conference in 2024. One of Qualcomm’s engineers, Issam Khalil, has confidently stated that these laptops are equipped to handle a wide array of Windows games with relative ease.
Khalil presents three distinct approaches through which the Snapdragon X Elite can run Windows games. The first is a direct port of games to ARM64, ensuring optimal CPU performance and power management. This method allows the laptops to adjust processor frequencies as needed, avoiding any intermediary emulation layer that could potentially hinder performance.
The second method involves creating ARM64EC hybrid apps. In this model, Windows libraries and Qualcomm’s drivers run natively, while the rest of the app is emulated. Khalil assures that this delivers a performance close to native execution.
Perhaps the most intriguing approach does not require any additional effort from game developers, allowing games to operate on the Snapdragon X Elite laptops through x64 emulation. While this is not the most finely tuned for performance, Khalil reassures gamers that any performance dips during the transition from x64 to ARM64 are minor and limited to the initial code translation phase. Upon subsequent executions, the code is readily retrieved from the cache, enhancing the process.
Qualcomm has also equipped the Snapdragon X Elite with robust Adreno GPU drivers, underscoring support for popular graphics APIs like Vulkan, DX11, DX12, OpenCL, and mapping layers for OpenGL 4.6 and DX9. Despite not listing specific games, the company remains confident in the laptops’ ability to efficiently run most top Windows games, having conducted tests with high-profile Steam games.
While the industry anticipates these advances, consumers looking for powerful portable computing can explore current options such as the 2023 Apple MacBook with M3 Pro, celebrated for its performance capabilities in various computing tasks.
