Sony’s latest PS5 system software beta is bringing a major quality-of-life upgrade to PlayStation 5 Pro owners by enabling PSSR 2.0 automatically across supported gameplay. The update means players no longer need to search through console settings to activate the improved PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution feature.
With the new beta installed, the PS5 Pro turns on “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” by default. This allows PSSR 2.0 to run automatically, helping games look sharper and clearer while also reducing some visual issues and potential frame rate dips. For many players, the biggest benefit is convenience: the console now applies the enhanced image quality setting without requiring manual setup.
Previously, PS5 Pro users had to find the option in the system menu and enable it themselves. Because the setting was not especially obvious, many players may have missed out on the improved visual experience entirely. By switching it on by default, Sony is making one of the PS5 Pro’s most important features easier to access.
PSSR 2.0 is not a brand-new technology, but this beta update makes it far more useful for everyday players. Sony first introduced the improved version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution in March 2026, alongside Resident Evil: Requiem. The feature was designed to deliver better image reconstruction, improved clarity, and smoother performance compared with the original version of PSSR.
The original PSSR debuted with the PS5 Pro in November 2024 as one of the console’s headline features. It was promoted as an AI-driven upscaling solution created to improve visual fidelity while helping games maintain strong performance. In theory, it gave the PS5 Pro a way to produce higher-quality images without the same performance cost as native high-resolution rendering.
However, the first version of PSSR had a mixed reception. Some demanding games showed noticeable issues such as ghosting, shimmering, image artifacts, and blurry detail. These problems were especially visible in visually ambitious titles, where players expected the PS5 Pro to deliver a cleaner and more stable image.
PSSR 2.0 was created to address those shortcomings. Sony worked with AMD on the updated technology, which uses a machine-learning approach designed to produce cleaner upscaling results. The goal is to improve image stability, sharpen fine detail, and reduce distracting visual flaws that appeared in earlier implementations.
For PS5 Pro owners, the most important change is that PSSR 2.0 will now be applied more consistently. Instead of relying on players to discover and activate the feature manually, the beta update makes the improved upscaling mode the standard experience. That should help more users see the benefits immediately after updating their console.
Players who prefer the original visual presentation or want to compare results can still turn the setting off. To disable it, PS5 Pro users can open Settings, go to Screen and Video, select Video Output, and switch off “Enhance PSSR Image Quality.”
Sony has not yet confirmed when this update will roll out to all PS5 Pro owners. At the moment, the change is limited to participants in the PS5 system software beta program. If testing goes smoothly, the automatic PSSR 2.0 setting could become part of a future public PS5 update.
For now, the beta suggests Sony is continuing to refine the PS5 Pro experience after launch. By making PSSR 2.0 automatic, the company is ensuring that more players get sharper visuals, cleaner image quality, and a more polished experience without needing to adjust anything themselves.
