President Donald Trump has been a vocal advocate for producing consumer electronics in the United States, even threatening Apple CEO Tim Cook with a 25 percent tariff on devices made overseas. Emphasizing this stance, Trump Mobile unveiled the T1 Phone, priced at $499, and claimed to be manufactured in America. However, it soon emerged that the phone was actually produced in China, leading to the removal of any claims regarding its American origins from the official website.
An investigation revealed that the T1 Phone is essentially a revamped version of the China-made REVVL 7 Pro 5G. Retailing at $169, the original device is considered to have low-end specifications, yet Trump Mobile has marked up the price significantly to $499. Furthermore, the promotional images of the T1 Phone are photoshopped, leaving the real appearance of the commercial unit unknown.
Despite evidence contradicting the ‘Made in America’ claim, Trump Mobile has not fully retracted the misleading details from its press materials. While terms suggesting U.S. manufacturing have been removed, the company continues to emphasize its American roots and commitment to prioritizing the U.S. market.
“Trump Mobile is going to change the game,” the company asserts. “We’re building on the movement to put America first, and we will deliver the highest levels of quality and service. Our company is based right here in the United States because we know that’s what our customers want and deserve.”
Overall, while President Trump fervently advocates for onshore production, the reality remains challenging. Experts like Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggest it’s unlikely for major companies like Apple to relocate iPhone manufacturing to the U.S. Instead, Trump Mobile might benefit from focusing on delivering true value to customers with the T1 Phone’s price tag.
