PrismLinux 2026.03.05 Launches: A Major Update to the Ultralight Arch-Based Distro

PrismLinux, the minimalist Arch-based Linux distribution built for speed and efficiency, has just rolled out a major new release: PrismLinux 2026.03.05. This update isn’t a small refresh—it delivers a long list of meaningful changes aimed at smoother installation, better hardware support, and stronger overall performance, especially for users running Linux on less powerful PCs.

Known for its lightweight approach and performance-focused setup, PrismLinux started in Ukraine with a clear goal: provide a fast, responsive Arch experience without unnecessary bloat. It ships as a LiveCD and includes a graphical installer that supports multiple desktop environments. It also comes ready for performance tuning, offering pre-configured optimized kernel options like Liquorix and Zen, which many users prefer for responsiveness and gaming tweaks.

The biggest headline in this release is a complete installer redesign, paired with a full migration to Electrobun. The installer overhaul brings practical upgrades that make first-time setup easier and more flexible. Users can expect improved localization fixes, better password handling, more available packages during installation, and Firefox set as the default browser across all supported desktop environments. There’s also SSH support on the LiveCD, which is a helpful addition for remote access, troubleshooting, and advanced installs.

PrismLinux 2026.03.05 also expands language support, adding Russian and German, making the distro more accessible to a wider audience.

On the desktop side, there are several usability and polish improvements. In Plasma settings, VLC has been replaced with mpv, a move that many lightweight Linux fans will appreciate due to mpv’s efficient performance and minimal overhead. COSMIC has gained Kvantum support and updated default applets, helping improve the out-of-the-box look and functionality.

Under the hood, PrismLinux continues to modernize. Some system scripts have been migrated to Python, while backend work includes fixing issues tied to older packages, overhauling the repository, and improving performance. For gamers and performance enthusiasts, the distribution now uses ananicy-cpp to boost gaming performance through smarter process scheduling and system responsiveness.

Font and interface fans get something new as well: Maple Mono is now available directly in the PrismLinux repository, making it easier to install without extra manual steps.

Hardware support gets a notable boost with full Nvidia support on the LiveCD, which can make testing the distro and getting started much easier on Nvidia-based systems—often one of the biggest friction points for new Linux installs.

Another small but welcome change: PrismLinux About has been renamed to PrismLinux Hello, and it comes with a refreshed look, reinforcing the distro’s focus on a clean, modern first impression.

Looking ahead, the team says a custom package manager is currently in development, with more information expected in the coming months. If delivered well, that could become a key feature for PrismLinux users who want a smoother experience while still keeping Arch’s flexibility.

For anyone considering the switch, the ISO weighs in at 1.76 GB. System requirements are straightforward: a 64-bit processor, at least 2 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended), and 30 GB of disk space. PrismLinux 2026.03.05 positions itself as a strong choice for users who want an ultralight Arch-based distro with a modern installer, optimized performance, and improved support for everyday use, gaming, and Nvidia hardware.
