Amazon Prime Video is moving deeper into short-form content with a new push into on-demand news clips, a format that has become especially popular on apps like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts.
The company announced that it is expanding its news offering with short video clips covering both local and national stories. These clips will be available through the News section inside the Prime Video app, appearing in areas such as Trending Topics and Local News. The feature is launching first on TVs and living room devices, with plans to bring it to the web, iOS, and Android apps soon.
The new short-form news clips will sit alongside Prime Video’s existing local, national, and global news programming. In the U.S., this news content is available to all users, even those without an Amazon Prime subscription.
Amazon has not yet confirmed whether the mobile version of these news clips will use a vertical video format similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels. However, the company has described the clips as short-form content designed for mobile viewing on iPhone and Android devices.
The move shows how Amazon is trying to adapt Prime Video to changing viewing habits. Younger audiences, especially Gen Z, are increasingly turning to short-form video platforms for news updates, explainers, and commentary. While TikTok is widely known for entertainment, it has also become a major source of news discovery for many users. Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts are playing a similar role.
Amazon does not operate a major social video platform of its own, so adding short news clips to Prime Video gives the company a way to compete for viewers who prefer quick, easy-to-watch updates instead of traditional long-form broadcasts.
Still, short length alone may not be enough to attract younger viewers. Research has shown that many Gen Z news consumers prefer videos that feel natural, direct, and less heavily produced. They often respond to content that feels conversational, timely, and authentic, rather than traditional TV-style reporting.
Prime Video is also joining a broader streaming trend. Several major streaming services have recently added or tested short-form clips as part of their platforms. The shift reflects a wider industry effort to match how people now consume media: in shorter sessions, across multiple devices, and often while multitasking.
For Amazon, the addition of short-form news clips could make Prime Video more useful as a daily destination, not just a place to watch movies and series. By combining entertainment, live programming, and quick news updates, Prime Video is positioning itself to compete in a media landscape where attention is increasingly won in minutes, not hours.
