Premium 4K Blu-ray Player Poised for Imminent Debut

Krovatar KBU-500 high-end 4K Blu-ray player is set to launch soon

Krovatar is preparing to make a bigger move into the premium home theater market with the KBU-500, a new high-end 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player aimed at movie collectors, physical media fans, and serious audio enthusiasts.

New disc players have become increasingly rare in recent years, especially as many major brands have stepped away from the category. Krovatar appears to see an opportunity in that gap, offering a more advanced model for users who still value the picture quality, reliability, and ownership benefits of physical media.

The KBU-500 is expected to arrive in December as Krovatar’s second 4K UHD Blu-ray player. It will sit above the existing KBU-300, which has already been available in international markets and is also expected to reach Germany. Pricing has not yet been confirmed, but the KBU-500 is clearly positioned as a premium model. Since the KBU-300 sells for around €400, the new flagship player is likely to cost significantly more.

The KBU-500 uses an aluminum chassis and follows the standard Hi-Fi component width of 16.9 inches, making it a natural fit for dedicated home theater racks and audio setups. One of its standout design features is the front OLED display. Compared with older LED displays, OLED should deliver deeper blacks and a less distracting look in a dark cinema room, especially when showing basic information such as playback time.

Krovatar has also included physical controls on the front panel, something that is becoming less common on modern media players. The six-button layout includes eject, play, stop, forward, back, and power. This makes the unit easier to use for music playback without always reaching for the remote control.

Audio support is one of the biggest selling points of the KBU-500. The player is designed for more than just movies, with support for 5.1 audio from SACDs, DVD-Audio discs, and Blu-ray-based Pure Audio releases. These Blu-ray Audio discs are also known by other format names, but they are all based on standard Blu-ray technology and can work with compatible Blu-ray players.

The KBU-500 also supports the rare 2+2+2 audio format used by select classical music labels. This format may require a different speaker arrangement, so it is likely to appeal most to dedicated audiophiles with flexible listening rooms.

For home cinema users, the KBU-500 covers the key premium video and audio standards. Krovatar lists support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, two major high dynamic range formats that can improve contrast, brightness, and color performance on compatible TVs and projectors. On the audio side, the player supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for immersive surround sound setups.

Connectivity is also broad. The player includes USB 3.0 Type-A ports for external media playback, an RJ45 Ethernet port, and an RS232C serial port for remote control integration. Audio output options include coaxial, optical, and a second HDMI output, which can be useful for separating video and audio signals in more complex home theater systems.

The built-in power supply supports 100 to 240 volts at 50 and 60 Hz, making it suitable for different regions. Images of the player suggest that the power cable is detachable, which could make importing the unit easier for buyers outside its launch market.

The Krovatar KBU-500 is planned first for the US market. However, given that the company has already brought the KBU-300 to parts of Europe, a wider release for the new high-end model seems possible.

For collectors who still prefer the quality of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray over streaming, the KBU-500 could become an interesting new option. With Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, SACD support, DVD-Audio playback, and a premium aluminum build, Krovatar is aiming this player squarely at enthusiasts who want one device for both serious movie nights and high-quality music listening.
