Pokémon Gamma Emerald Reimagines a Game Boy Advance Classic in Unreal Engine 5
Pokémon Emerald remains one of the most beloved adventures in the long-running monster-catching series, and now a fan-made remake is giving the Hoenn region a modern 3D makeover. Titled Pokémon Gamma Emerald, the project rebuilds the Game Boy Advance classic from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5, offering players a fresh way to experience the early portion of the iconic journey.
The remake is being developed by solo creator UndreamedPanic, who has reportedly spent around two years working on the project, often dedicating close to 12 hours a day to its development. The result is an ambitious free fan game that is not a ROM hack, but a full remake built with new systems, updated visuals, custom 3D assets, and an original soundtrack.
The early access version of Pokémon Gamma Emerald became available on August 15 through the developer’s project page. While it is still far from complete, the current release already gives fans a meaningful look at what a fully modernized version of Pokémon Emerald could feel like.
The current build lets players begin their adventure in Littleroot Town and explore the Hoenn region up to Mauville City. At that point, a roadblock prevents progress into unfinished areas. In total, the early access version includes the first three Gyms, giving players around three to six hours of gameplay depending on how thoroughly they explore.
Even though only the first third of the region is currently playable, Pokémon Gamma Emerald already includes several important gameplay features. Players can experience a day-and-night cycle that affects which Pokémon appear, have Pokémon follow them in the overworld, take part in breeding, trade Pokémon, and rechallenge previously defeated Trainers after reaching the end of the available content.
One of the most impressive parts of the project is that the battle system was custom-built rather than simply copied from an existing game. Combined with Unreal Engine 5 visuals, new character and Pokémon models, and a redesigned world, Gamma Emerald feels like a much larger undertaking than a typical fan project.
However, fans hoping for a rapid rollout of new content may need to be patient. After two intense years of development, UndreamedPanic has announced plans to take a break. That means new areas, additional Gyms, and even bug fixes may not arrive anytime soon. Still, the project is currently described as being in development, so it does not appear to be abandoned.
The fan response has been largely positive, with many players praising the scale and polish of the remake, especially considering it was created by a single developer. Some users have noted that performance optimization still needs work. For example, reports suggest that the game can run at around 50 frames per second on Steam Deck while drawing roughly 25 watts, indicating that the current build may still be demanding for handheld hardware.
At the same time, excitement around Pokémon Gamma Emerald has been mixed with concern. Many fans are worried that Nintendo or other rights holders connected to the Pokémon franchise could take action against the project before it is completed. Fan remakes based on major gaming properties have often faced legal challenges in the past, especially when they use recognizable characters, settings, and branding.
UndreamedPanic has made it clear that Pokémon Gamma Emerald is completely free and non-commercial. The developer does not accept payments or donations for the game and states that the project has no official connection to Nintendo, Game Freak, Creatures, or The Pokémon Company. Whether that will be enough to keep the remake online remains uncertain.
For now, Pokémon Gamma Emerald stands as one of the most ambitious Pokémon fan remakes in recent memory. With Unreal Engine 5 graphics, a rebuilt Hoenn region, custom gameplay systems, and three Gyms already playable, it offers a fascinating glimpse at what a modern Pokémon Emerald remake could look like. Fans may have to wait a while for future updates, but the early access release has already captured plenty of attention from players eager to return to Hoenn in a new way.
