SNK is bringing back a true 90s icon in a way retro fans have been asking for. In partnership with Plaion, the company has revealed the NeoGeo AES+, a modern-day revival of the classic NeoGeo AES home console. It preserves the look and feel of the original system while adding modern connectivity and quality-of-life upgrades, and it’s even compatible with original NeoGeo AES cartridges.
Up for pre-order now, the NeoGeo AES+ is scheduled to start shipping on November 12, 2026, with a price of $249.99. Unlike many modern retro-style consoles, this one is designed to work with real cartridges and focuses on faithfully reproducing the original experience.
A modern NeoGeo AES that still plays the real cartridges
The biggest headline for collectors and longtime NeoGeo fans is straightforward: the NeoGeo AES+ supports both original and newly produced NeoGeo AES game cartridges. That means existing libraries aren’t stuck on a shelf, and new releases can still be enjoyed on modern displays.
Plaion is also making the console flexible for different setups. You get HDMI for today’s TVs, alongside AV input ports for anyone who still prefers playing on a CRT. It’s a nice nod to authenticity, since many retro players still love the look and feel of classic scanlines and CRT motion.
Not emulation, not FPGA: Plaion’s hardware approach
Plaion says the NeoGeo AES+ doesn’t rely on traditional software emulation, and it’s not an FPGA-based recreation either. Instead, the company describes it as using legacy ASIC chips that have been re-engineered to modern standards to replicate the original console’s hardware and software behavior as accurately as possible.
For buyers, the practical takeaway is the same goal: a NeoGeo-style experience that aims to feel like original hardware, not a software approximation.
New features built for modern play
While the external design stays true to the original NeoGeo AES, the feature list is much more current. The NeoGeo AES+ includes conveniences and tweaks that retro fans will appreciate, including HDMI output, DIP switches for language selection, support for overclocking, display mode selection, and permanent high score saving (though it requires a memory card that’s sold separately).
Included controller and classic 15-pin compatibility
Every NeoGeo AES+ ships with a wired Arcade Stick, and it’s built as a 1:1 replica that connects through the classic 15-pin connector. That connector choice has a major bonus: the new Arcade Stick is compatible with the original NeoGeo AES console, and original NeoGeo controllers can be used on the NeoGeo AES+ as well.
Along with the controller, the standard NeoGeo AES+ package also includes an HDMI cable and a power brick, so it’s ready to plug in right out of the box.
Games and accessories are on the way
Plaion is also planning to sell 10 classic game cartridges, including well-known favorites like Metal Slug and Big Tournament Golf. In addition, a wireless version of the original NeoGeo gamepad is also on the way, giving players an alternative to the Arcade Stick for different genres and play styles.
NeoGeo AES+ editions and pricing
Plaion is offering multiple versions depending on how all-in you want to go:
NeoGeo AES+ (Standard Edition) priced at $249.99. Ships with the console and a wired Arcade Stick, plus an HDMI cable and power brick. Launch shipping date is November 12, 2026.
NeoGeo AES+ Anniversary Edition priced at $349.99. This version comes in white and includes a white Metal Slug cartridge, a white wireless Arcade Stick with a matching 15-pin dongle, and a white memory card.
NeoGeo AES+ Ultimate Edition priced at $999.99. Available in very limited quantities, it includes the black console with a matching wired Arcade Stick, a wireless Arcade Stick, a wireless gamepad, a memory card, 10 NeoGeo cartridges, and a game rack.
Why the NeoGeo AES+ could be a big deal for retro gaming
The NeoGeo AES has always been legendary, not just for its arcade-perfect games but for its premium, collector-focused status. With the NeoGeo AES+, SNK and Plaion are aiming at that same audience—people who want real cartridges, authentic controller connections, and the option to play on both modern TVs and CRT displays, without losing the character that made the original system special.
If you’ve been looking for a modern NeoGeo console that respects the original hardware ecosystem while adding HDMI and other modern upgrades, the NeoGeo AES+ is shaping up to be one of the most notable retro console releases of 2026.
