Pixel Phones Could Finally Get Double-Tap to Lock with Android 17
Pixel users may finally be getting a simple but highly requested feature that many Android owners have enjoyed for years: double-tap to lock. The gesture lets you lock your phone by tapping twice on an empty area of the home screen, removing the need to press the power button every time.
The feature has long been available on several Android devices, including models from other major phone brands, but Google’s Pixel lineup has never officially offered it. That may soon change, based on new clues found in the latest Android 17 beta build.
Recent Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 code includes updated references to a “double-tap-to-sleep” function. Earlier versions of the code did not specifically mention the home screen, but the newer text does. That change strongly suggests Google is working on a Pixel feature that allows users to double-tap the home screen to turn off the display and lock the device.
For many users, this would be a small but meaningful upgrade. Locking a phone with a gesture can be faster and more convenient, especially on larger devices where reaching for the power button is not always comfortable. It can also help reduce wear on the physical button over time.
This is not the first time signs of the feature have appeared. Similar hints were discovered during earlier Android beta testing, but the option never reached the stable public release. The fact that the code has now been updated again suggests Google may still be actively preparing it for a future Pixel update.
There are also signs that the feature could get its own dedicated settings page. If that happens, Pixel users may be able to turn double-tap to lock on or off depending on their preference. Google has not officially announced the feature yet, so it remains unclear whether it will arrive in an upcoming Android 17 beta or be saved for the final public release.
If it does launch, double-tap to lock would be one of those practical Pixel improvements that may not sound flashy but could quickly become part of everyday use. Pixel owners have been asking for more customizable gestures and easier lock-screen controls, and this feature would be a welcome step in that direction.
For now, the feature is still in development, and there is no confirmed release date. However, the latest Android 17 beta hints make it clear that Google is at least testing the idea. If everything goes smoothly, Pixel phones may soon become a little easier and more convenient to use.
