A new concept phone called the Pixel Duo is imagining a different approach to smartphone screens by putting two displays on the front: a larger e-ink panel paired with a smaller LCD/IPS screen. The idea is simple but interesting—use each display for what it does best, and make everyday phone use more comfortable while improving battery life.
The e-ink display is meant to handle most of the phone’s regular tasks. Because e-ink technology is designed to be power-efficient and easier on the eyes for reading, it would be well-suited for things like ebooks, articles, messages, and other content you typically scroll through for long periods. If most apps and information live on the e-ink screen, the phone wouldn’t need to rely as heavily on a power-hungry traditional display throughout the day.
Meanwhile, the smaller LCD is there for moments when you want smoother motion and richer visuals. That could include watching videos, browsing the web with faster refresh behavior, or using the rear camera while still having a front-facing display assisting you. Even though the LCD area is relatively small, it’s positioned as the “quick-action” screen you can tap into whenever e-ink isn’t the right fit.
One of the most practical ideas behind the Pixel Duo concept is multitasking. The dual-screen setup is designed to keep key controls visible without interrupting what you’re doing on the main display. For example, music playback controls could sit on the IPS panel while you continue reading on the e-ink screen below. It’s also intended to work well for at-a-glance tasks, with the LCD showing the time and widgets so essential info is always available.
Because the majority of content would appear on the larger e-ink display, the concept suggests the Pixel Duo could deliver exceptionally long battery life compared to typical smartphones. Still, it’s important to note that this device is only a concept at the moment, and there are currently no plans for a commercial release.
