Philips Unveils Its 1,000Hz Dual-Mode Envia 27M2N5500XD Monitor Ahead of Worldwide Release

Philips is stepping up the esports monitor race with the Envia 27M2N5500XD, a 27-inch gaming display now launched in China that’s built for one thing above all: extreme speed. Designed for competitive players who prioritize ultra-smooth motion and the lowest perceived latency, this monitor pushes refresh rates well beyond what most current high-end gaming screens offer, including many newer OLED options—though it comes with a few expected trade-offs.

At the center of the Envia 27M2N5500XD is a fast IPS-based panel supplied by TCL CSOT, described as an updated “HFS Shoot” variant. Out of the box, the monitor runs at a sharp 2560 x 1440 (QHD) resolution with an eye-catching 500 Hz refresh rate. For players willing to reduce resolution for maximum frame delivery, it also includes a dual-mode setting that drops to 1280 x 720 (HD) and boosts the refresh rate all the way to 1,000 Hz. That kind of headroom is aimed squarely at esports titles where raw speed and clarity during rapid movement matter more than pixel density.

While the refresh-rate headline grabs attention, Philips has shared a fuller picture of the display’s specs. The Envia 27M2N5500XD is rated for VESA DisplayHDR 400 and reaches up to 500 nits peak brightness in HDR, with 350 nits in SDR. It’s also listed with a 2000:1 contrast ratio—strong on paper for this class—along with wide color coverage figures: 96% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB, and 94% Adobe RGB. Even so, HDR 400 certification generally signals entry-level HDR performance, so buyers expecting deep, cinematic HDR impact may find it less impressive than premium HDR or OLED alternatives.

For motion performance, Philips lists a 1 ms response time and includes a 0.3 ms Smart MBR (motion blur reduction) mode for improved clarity during fast camera pans and high-speed tracking. Variable refresh rate support is included via FreeSync, helping reduce screen tearing and stutter when frame rates fluctuate.

Philips also packs in several gamer-focused visibility tools that have become common in tournament-style monitors. Options like Smart Sniper, Shadow Boost, and Smart Crosshair are designed to enhance target acquisition, improve visibility in darker areas, and provide aiming assistance—features that can be especially useful in competitive shooters and fast-paced esports games.

One of the most important details for a monitor built around ultra-high refresh rates is bandwidth, and the Envia 27M2N5500XD is equipped accordingly. It includes DisplayPort 2.1 with UHBR20-class bandwidth (up to 80 Gbps), which is key for pushing very high refresh rates at higher resolutions with fewer compromises. It also comes with full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports (48 Gbps) and a headphone jack, giving players flexible connectivity for PCs and modern consoles.

Ergonomics are covered too. The included stand supports height adjustment, swivel, pivot, and tilt—important for long sessions and multi-monitor setups, especially for players who want a portrait side display or precise alignment.

For now, the Philips Envia 27M2N5500XD is officially available in China, and a wider global rollout is expected later. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, which is likely to be a deciding factor given how specialized a 500 Hz to 1,000 Hz gaming monitor is. Still, for competitive gamers chasing the smoothest possible gameplay and the fastest motion clarity, this display is shaping up to be one of the most interesting high-refresh monitors to watch ahead of its international release.
