Panasonic Debuts a Featherweight 144g Full-Frame Lens at Just $399

Panasonic is expanding its full-frame lineup with a compact new prime designed for photographers and creators who want high image quality without adding bulk to their kit. The Panasonic Lumix S 40mm f/2.0 (S-S40) is built to be especially lightweight at just 144g, making it an appealing everyday lens for travel, street photography, and video work where portability matters.

Despite its small size, Panasonic is aiming for solid optical performance. The lens uses a seven-element design arranged in six groups, including three elements with aspherical surfaces. This type of construction is commonly used to help keep images sharp while reducing distortion and other optical imperfections, which is particularly useful in a compact prime lens.

For close-up shooting, the Lumix S 40mm f/2.0 offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.3 meters. That allows for a maximum magnification of 0.17, giving you the flexibility to frame tighter detail shots, food photography, small objects, or casual near-subject portraits without needing a dedicated macro lens.

The lens also supports a 62mm filter thread, so it works with widely available screw-on filters such as ND filters for video, polarizers for landscapes, or protective UV filters.

Importantly for compatibility, this model is being released exclusively for the L-Mount. That means it will work not only with Panasonic Lumix S-series full-frame cameras, but also with other L-Mount bodies such as Leica SL cameras and the Sigma BF, giving cross-brand users another compact prime option within the same mount ecosystem.
