Opera has unveiled an innovative new browser, “Opera Air,” designed to enhance users’ mental well-being and mindfulness while browsing the web. This latest offering integrates unique features such as break reminders, breathing exercises, soothing soundscapes, and binaural beats to improve focus and reduce stress during online activities.
Recognizing that individuals spend a considerable amount of their work hours online, Opera wanted to transform the conventional browser from just a tool into a comprehensive platform for mental relaxation and concentration. The browser sports a modern and airy design with semi-transparent theming that adds to its calming effect.
In its floating sidebar, Opera Air introduces practical tools like a break reminder and a “Boosts” feature. The break reminder uses a visual system with three bars that alert users when it’s time to step away from the screen, encouraging necessary breaks based on user-defined durations. Users can turn off this notification if they prefer uninterrupted sessions.
For these breaks, Opera Air offers guided breathing exercises, neck stretches, meditation practices, and even full body scans. For an interactive experience, users can enable their camera to receive posture and form guidance during neck stretches.
Currently, the browser’s guided exercises are available in English, with plans to introduce voiceovers in other languages. Another standout feature, Boosts, delivers a blend of music, ambient sounds, and binaural beats. These beats tweak frequencies in each ear to form a new auditory “ghost” frequency that aids concentration and mental clarity. Users can customize the sounds and their durations, ranging from brief 15-minute sessions to limitless playtime, all accessible from the sidebar.
Opera’s decision to create Opera Air as a separate browser instead of incorporating these features into an existing one stems from their vision to provide a completely mindful experience. According to Mohamed Salah, Opera’s product director, the aim is to focus on mindfulness through dedicated tools and a minimalist design approach, distinguishing it from their productivity-focused Opera One browser.
Opera’s challenge will be enticing users to embrace this new minimalistic approach, as existing users may be accustomed to the expansive features of Opera’s other browsers like Opera One and Opera GX. However, with the growing interest in digital mindfulness and workspace well-being, Opera Air may attract users seeking a more relaxed and holistic browsing experience.
