OpenAI is preparing to simplify the ChatGPT desktop app by combining the Chat and Work tabs into a single experience, a move that could make the app easier to navigate for users who switch between brainstorming, writing, coding, and task automation.
The current ChatGPT desktop app can feel a little crowded. Users can move between ChatGPT and Codex areas, and inside ChatGPT, there are separate Chat and Work tabs. For people juggling multiple projects, files, prompts, and tasks, it can become difficult to remember where a conversation started or where a project is being handled.
To reduce that friction, OpenAI is planning to merge the Chat and Work tabs within ChatGPT. According to an email sent to users, the updated experience will first be tested with a selected group of people so OpenAI can collect feedback before making it available more broadly.
The goal is to let users move more naturally from an idea to an actual finished task without jumping between different parts of the app. For example, someone could start by discussing a concept with ChatGPT, then bring in files, use plugins, and ask the assistant to create a website, prepare a presentation, or complete web-based tasks, all from the same place. Users would still be able to review, guide, and refine ChatGPT’s work throughout the process.
OpenAI also clarified that Codex will remain separate inside the ChatGPT desktop app. That means users who rely on Codex for software development and coding-related workflows will still find it in its own dedicated area, while the main ChatGPT experience becomes more unified.
Another important change involves token usage. Once the transition takes place, ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same token allowance pool. OpenAI said this should not affect most users in a major way. However, depending on how often someone uses the tools and which models they choose, some users may reach their limits sooner and need to wait for their allowance to reset more often.
This update reflects a broader shift in AI productivity tools toward simpler, all-in-one workspaces. Instead of separating casual conversations from more advanced task execution, OpenAI appears to be moving toward a smoother workflow where ChatGPT can help users think, create, and complete projects in one continuous session.
For everyday users, the combined Chat and Work experience could make the ChatGPT desktop app feel less fragmented. For professionals, creators, developers, students, and teams, it may also reduce the time spent switching tabs and help keep projects organized.
OpenAI has not yet confirmed when the merged Chat and Work tabs will roll out to all users. For now, the company is expected to gather feedback from the initial test group before expanding the redesigned ChatGPT desktop experience more widely.
