OpenAI is doubling down on the Mac. The company behind ChatGPT has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the team that built Sky, a natural language interface designed to streamline work across macOS. The move signals a push to bring deeper, on-device automation and smarter workflows to Apple’s desktop ecosystem.
In announcing the deal, OpenAI said: “We will bring Sky’s deep macOS integration and product craft into ChatGPT, and all members of the team will join OpenAI.”
Sky is an AI assistant purpose-built for the Mac. It understands what’s on your screen, can take actions inside your apps, and helps you move from idea to execution without breaking flow. That means you can ask it to summarize a webpage, then have it send that summary to a specific contact via Messages. You can build custom scripts, shortcuts, and commands to extend what your favorite apps can do. And it all lives in a compact floating window that stays on top of your workspace.
OpenAI added: “Sky is a powerful natural language interface for the Mac. With Sky, AI works alongside you, whether you’re writing, planning, coding, or managing your day. Sky understands what’s on your screen and can take action using your apps. We will bring Sky’s deep macOS integration and product craft into ChatGPT, and all members of the team will join OpenAI.”
Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, summed up the strategy: “Sky’s deep integration with the Mac accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day.”
There’s serious pedigree behind Sky. The same team previously created Workflow, the influential automation app that Apple acquired in 2017 and rebranded as Shortcuts. Workflow pioneered the idea of linking multiple app actions into a single tap, helping users automate complex processes. Sky takes that concept further with natural language control, screen awareness, and tight macOS integration.
This acquisition also turns up the heat on the broader race to bring intelligent, context-aware automation to everyday computing. Apple has been building toward in-app actions and personalized context through its own efforts, often discussed under the umbrella of Apple Intelligence and ongoing Siri upgrades. While Apple continues iterating across its platforms, reports have suggested some internal concerns about the performance of an upcoming Siri revamp, which is expected to arrive in a future iOS release targeted for spring 2026.
There’s been turbulence on the talent front as well. Reports indicate that Ke Yang, recently appointed to lead Apple’s Answers, Knowledge and Information team, is leaving for a role at Meta Platforms Inc.
For Mac users, the implications of OpenAI’s move are straightforward: expect more powerful, native-feeling AI assistance directly in the apps you rely on. By folding Sky’s macOS expertise into ChatGPT, OpenAI aims to make tasks like research, drafting, coding, planning, and messaging faster and more fluid—without constant context switching. And with the creators of Workflow now focused on bringing that same automation magic to modern AI interfaces, everyday productivity on the Mac could be in for a meaningful upgrade.
