OnePlus 15R Leak Suggests Camera Cutback as Telephoto Lens Disappears Compared to 13R

OnePlus is getting ready to roll out the OnePlus 15R globally on December 17, 2025, positioning it as a more budget-friendly option alongside the OnePlus 15. While the phone’s headline feature is its flagship-grade Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, a fresh leak suggests OnePlus is also making a notable shift in the camera department—one that some fans may see as a downgrade.

According to the leak, the OnePlus 15R is expected to arrive with a dual rear camera setup led by a 50MP Sony IMX906 sensor (1/1.56-inch), paired with an 8MP IMX355 ultrawide camera. That’s a simpler configuration than the previous generation, as the OnePlus 13R offered a triple-camera array that included a dedicated 50MP telephoto lens, alongside its 50MP primary sensor (LYT700, also 1/1.56-inch) and 8MP ultrawide.

In other words, the OnePlus 15R may trade optical zoom versatility for a cleaner, two-camera approach. For buyers who frequently rely on telephoto shots—portraits, distant subjects, or more natural-looking zoom—this could be a meaningful change.

There is still good news for video fans. The leak claims the OnePlus 15R can record 4K video at up to 120fps, which—if accurate—would give it impressive slow-motion potential at high resolution for its price category.

On the imaging software side, OnePlus is also bringing its new DetailMax Engine to the 15R. This processing approach was introduced with the OnePlus 15, serving as the company’s updated direction for image tuning. If OnePlus can deliver strong dynamic range, sharp detail, and reliable color in everyday shooting, the new engine could help offset the missing telephoto lens for many users.

For selfies, OnePlus has confirmed a 32MP front-facing camera with autofocus, plus 4K video recording at 30fps. Autofocus on a selfie camera is still a standout feature in many phones, especially for sharper face detail and more consistent focus in group shots or vlogging.

Beyond cameras, the OnePlus 15R looks set to focus heavily on performance and endurance. It’s confirmed to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, and it’s also expected to pack a large 7,400mAh battery with 80W fast charging—specs that suggest all-day (and likely multi-day) battery life for many users, plus quick top-ups when needed.

With launch day approaching, the OnePlus 15R is shaping up to be a performance-first Android phone with premium chipset power, large battery capacity, and ambitious video features—while making a clear trade-off in rear camera flexibility by dropping the telephoto lens found in its predecessor.
