Apple’s iOS 27 could make switching between two iPhones easier than ever
Apple may be preparing one of its most convenient iPhone features yet with iOS 27: the ability to use the same phone number on two different iPhones. While modern iPhones already support dual-SIM, allowing users to run two numbers on one device, this new feature works in the opposite direction. Instead of adding more numbers to one iPhone, it lets one number move seamlessly between two iPhones.
The feature is reportedly called Handoff, and it could be especially useful for people who like using more than one iPhone depending on the situation. For example, someone might prefer a slim and lightweight iPhone Air during the day, but switch to a larger iPhone Ultra when they want a bigger screen for entertainment, gaming, productivity, or travel.
The idea is simple: your phone number becomes active on the iPhone you most recently unlocked. If you unlock your second iPhone, your number moves there automatically. If you later unlock your first iPhone, the number switches back. This could remove much of the hassle currently involved in swapping SIM cards, transferring eSIMs, or managing multiple mobile plans.
To use the feature, both iPhones will need to have Handoff enabled in the Cellular section of the Settings app. The SIM card or eSIM itself does not physically move from one device to another. It stays installed on the original iPhone, while iOS handles the active connection between the two devices.
There is one important limitation: only the iPhone currently using the number can make calls, send cellular messages, and access mobile data through that number. The other iPhone remains available for Wi-Fi use, but it will not have cellular service until the number becomes active on it again.
Carrier support will also be required. Not every mobile provider may support this feature at launch, so availability could depend on your region and wireless plan. In the United States, T-Mobile is said to be among the carriers supporting the feature.
The timing of this feature makes sense. Apple is expected to introduce its largest iPhone yet, rumored to be called the iPhone Ultra. A larger device may be ideal for power users, but not everyone wants to carry a big phone all the time. With iOS 27 Handoff, Apple could give users the freedom to switch between a compact iPhone and a larger model without losing access to their main number.
This could be a major quality-of-life upgrade for iPhone owners who keep multiple devices. It may appeal to professionals who use one iPhone for work and another for personal convenience, travelers who want a backup device ready to go, or enthusiasts who upgrade often but still keep an older iPhone around.
Older iPhones are also expected to receive the feature once iOS 27 launches this fall, though Apple has not yet confirmed the full list of compatible models. If widely supported, this could become one of the most practical additions in iOS 27, making the Apple ecosystem feel even more connected.
For users who have ever wished they could carry a smaller iPhone one day and a larger iPhone the next without dealing with SIM transfers, iOS 27 may finally offer the solution.
