NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.56 reportedly delivers major boosts in CUDA, OpenCL, and GPU compute performance
NVIDIA’s latest GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.56 appears to be more than a routine driver update. Early benchmark results suggest the release brings meaningful performance gains in several compute-heavy workloads, especially those involving CUDA, OpenCL, ray tracing, and rendering.
According to testing shared by X user @opinali, the new driver introduces performance-impacting changes that go beyond the expected CUDA 13.4 support. While most driver releases usually offer game optimizations, bug fixes, and support for new titles, this update seems to provide measurable improvements in synthetic benchmarks and professional rendering tests.
One of the biggest jumps was seen in the 3DMark DirectX Raytracing path-tracing benchmark using an RTX 5080 system. With the previous driver, the GPU reportedly delivered close to 90 FPS. After installing GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.56, performance rose to around 98 FPS, marking an impressive 8.1% increase. For a driver-only update, that is a significant gain and suggests NVIDIA may have made deeper-level optimizations to its rendering or compute stack.
Other 3DMark results also showed smaller but still noticeable improvements. Speedway reportedly improved by around 1.8%, while Steel Nomad Vulkan saw a gain of roughly 2.5%. These results point toward stronger performance in workloads that lean heavily on GPU compute, rendering pipelines, and graphics API efficiency.
The improvements were even more interesting in creative and productivity benchmarks. Blender 5.2.0 reportedly saw a 6.1% performance uplift, while Cinebench R26 improved by about 6.7%. These gains could matter for users who rely on NVIDIA GPUs for 3D rendering, animation, modeling, and other GPU-accelerated creation tasks.
OpenCL appears to be the standout winner in this driver release. Geekbench 7 testing reportedly showed OpenCL performance increasing by a massive 21.7%. CUDA performance also improved, with a gain of around 5.5%. The tester noted that OpenCL has often lagged behind CUDA on NVIDIA hardware, but with this driver, OpenCL performance is now said to be faster than Vulkan in the tested workload and within roughly 30% of CUDA performance.
Gaming results, however, were much more restrained. Titles using ray tracing or path tracing did not show major changes overall. Horizon Forbidden West reportedly gained about 2% in both native and upscaled scenarios, while Dying Light 2 improved by around 2.5% at native resolution. These are welcome gains, but they are far smaller than the jumps seen in compute and rendering benchmarks.
Overall, GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.56 looks like a noteworthy update for users focused on GPU compute, CUDA, OpenCL, and professional rendering workloads. Gamers may see only minor improvements depending on the title, but creators, benchmark enthusiasts, and users working with GPU-accelerated applications may benefit more from this release.
If these results hold up across broader testing, NVIDIA’s 616.56 driver could become one of the more impactful recent updates for RTX GPU owners, particularly those using high-end cards like the RTX 5080 for rendering, benchmarking, and compute-heavy tasks.
