NVIDIA’s release of the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti in two variations—8GB and 16GB—has sparked discussions in the gaming community, and not all of it is positive. Many enthusiasts are raising eyebrows at the surprisingly limited capabilities of the 8GB model, particularly when it comes to 2K and 4K gaming. It appears NVIDIA may have been better off including a cautionary note about its performance in such demanding settings.
The debut of the RTX 5060 series was expected to introduce RTX Blackwell GPUs into the mainstream market with a bang, ready to challenge existing models. Offering options with different VRAM capacities suggested only minor differences in their gaming prowess. However, NVIDIA predominantly sent out 16GB units for review, leaving the true capabilities of the 8GB variant a bit of a mystery—until it was evaluated by HardwareUnboxed (HU).
HU’s benchmarks of the 8GB model were nothing short of disappointing, highlighting its struggles in modern gaming scenarios. The virtual memory constraint severely hampers the GPU’s performance, leading HU to label it as “obsolete” for gaming. This candid assessment serves as a red flag for potential buyers who are considering the lesser VRAM model as their go-to for current titles.
Take “The Last of Us Part II,” for example. The 16GB version outperformed the 8GB model with an impressive 120% higher 1% Low FPS, averaging around 70 FPS, compared to the latter’s 35 FPS on 4K Very High settings. The variance in performance only intensified under different configurations, reaching up to 320% at times. The trend continued with other popular games like “Final Fantasy XIV” and “Hogwarts Legacy,” where the larger VRAM model consistently bested the 8GB option by 30%-40%.
These comparisons paint a clear picture: while NVIDIA’s intentions with the RTX 5060 lineup may have been ambitious, especially with hopes of surpassing competitors like the AMD RX 9070 series, the 8GB version fails to deliver the needed punch. Though not entirely useless, the limited memory makes it an unwise investment for gamers looking for a future-proof option. For those exploring NVIDIA’s latest offerings, the 16GB model is undoubtedly the one to consider to ensure a smooth and satisfying gaming experience.
