Nvidia Introduces AI Video Detector With Up to 94% Accuracy to Fight Deepfakes
AI-generated videos are becoming more realistic, and that is making fake news harder to identify. What once required obvious editing can now be created with generative AI tools that produce believable footage of people, places, and events that never happened. As deepfake videos continue to improve, media organizations are under growing pressure to verify content quickly before it reaches the public.
Nvidia is now targeting that challenge with a new Synthetic Video Detector, a tool designed to help broadcasters, newsrooms, and live-streaming platforms spot AI-generated footage in real time.
The company introduced the Synthetic Video Detector at SIGGRAPH 2026. The system is built as an Nvidia NIM microservice, meaning it can be integrated into existing media workflows and used to analyze video content frame by frame. After scanning footage, the tool provides a prediction score that indicates whether the video is likely to be synthetic or authentic.
The goal is to give editorial teams a faster way to fact-check visual content, especially during breaking news situations where speed and accuracy are critical. With AI-generated misinformation spreading rapidly across social platforms and live video channels, tools like this could become essential for preventing manipulated footage from reaching large audiences.
Rev Lebaredian, Nvidia’s vice president of physical AI simulation technology, said the idea behind the system is straightforward: the same AI advancements that make synthetic video possible can also be used to detect it. In other words, Nvidia is using AI to fight AI-driven misinformation.
The Synthetic Video Detector is already being adopted by Wowza, a company that provides enterprise-grade live video and media server technology to broadcasters and streaming platforms. Wowza is integrating Nvidia’s detector into its video infrastructure as part of a broader push toward real-time AI-powered media analysis.
Wowza CEO Krish Kumar said the market is shifting toward live video systems that can generate insights while streams are still active. That makes real-time deepfake detection especially valuable, as it allows suspicious footage to be flagged before it is widely distributed.
Nvidia says the tool delivers strong performance even when video quality changes. On uncompressed video, the Synthetic Video Detector can identify AI-generated content with 92% accuracy. When footage is compressed by 15%, accuracy drops to 87%. At 50% compression, it still maintains an 82% accuracy rate.
That matters because most videos shared online or used in live broadcasts are compressed in some way. A detection system that only works on pristine footage would have limited real-world value. Nvidia’s results suggest the tool remains useful even when video files have been reduced in quality for streaming or distribution.
Speed is another major advantage. Nvidia says the NIM microservice can process a 1080p video file in about 22 milliseconds on RTX systems and around 30 milliseconds on L40 GPUs. That level of performance makes it practical for live broadcast environments, where delays must be kept to a minimum.
Internal testing with Nvidia’s latest model showed even stronger results, reaching an AUC score of 0.9614 and accuracy of up to 94%. Organizations using the technology can also adjust detection thresholds based on their own risk tolerance. For example, a newsroom covering breaking news may choose stricter settings to flag more potentially suspicious footage, while another platform may tune the system to reduce false positives.
The detector is also expected to reach a wide audience through Wowza’s Video Intelligence Framework, which is deployed in tens of thousands of environments across nearly 170 countries. That means Nvidia’s AI video detection technology could be used not only in traditional newsrooms, but also across live-streaming platforms, enterprise video systems, and other real-time media services.
As generative AI tools become more accessible, the battle against deepfakes is likely to become one of the most important challenges in digital media. Nvidia’s Synthetic Video Detector is not a complete solution to misinformation, but it gives media companies a powerful new way to verify video content faster and more accurately.
For viewers, this technology could help reduce the spread of convincing fake footage. For broadcasters and streaming services, it may become a key part of maintaining trust in an era where seeing is no longer always believing.
