NVIDIA RTX Remix 1.6 brings DLSS 5, 6X frame generation, Windows on ARM support, and Minecraft Java Edition path tracing
NVIDIA has rolled out a major update for RTX Remix, its open-source modding platform designed to help creators transform older PC games with modern visuals. RTX Remix 1.6 adds a long list of upgrades, including DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, support for up to 6X Multi Frame Generation, native Windows on ARM compatibility, improved AI asset creation tools, and early experimental support for Minecraft Java Edition.
RTX Remix has become one of NVIDIA’s most ambitious tools for the modding community. It allows developers and fans to rebuild classic games with path-traced lighting, improved materials, enhanced textures, upgraded assets, and advanced RTX rendering features. With version 1.6, the platform takes another big step forward, offering better image quality, stronger performance options, and more flexible tools for creators.
One of the biggest additions in RTX Remix 1.6 is DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. This technology uses AI to improve how lighting, materials, and surfaces appear in a scene. Instead of simply enhancing an image after it is rendered, the system takes geometry, textures, lighting, and scene data into account to produce more realistic results.
For modders, NVIDIA has added new artistic controls inside the RTX Remix Toolkit. Creators can choose between three neural rendering models labeled A, B, and C. They can also adjust highlights, volumetric effects, and per-material control masks. This gives modders more freedom to fine-tune how their RTX remasters look, whether they want a more cinematic presentation, stronger lighting effects, or a cleaner visual style.
NVIDIA has already shown DLSS 5 running in community RTX Remix projects such as Fallout 4 RTX and Mirror’s Edge RTX. In Fallout 4 RTX, the technology improves reflections, lighting behavior, and the sense of depth across materials. In Mirror’s Edge RTX, it helps create more natural contact shadows and stronger ambient occlusion, making environments feel more grounded and realistic.
Performance is also a major focus of this update. RTX Remix 1.6 includes DLSS Frame Generation Performance Mode, also known as Preset C. This mode uses a lighter algorithm designed to reduce the performance cost of frame generation. The trade-off is a possible reduction in image quality, but for demanding path-traced games, the added speed may be worthwhile.
RTX Remix 1.6 also introduces 5X and 6X Multi Frame Generation for supported GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards. This can significantly increase displayed frame rates in heavy path-traced remasters. However, as with all frame generation technologies, generated frames do not improve the game’s actual simulation speed or input response in the same way as traditionally rendered frames.
Another important rendering upgrade is Sparse Rendering. This feature reduces the number of lighting samples calculated before DLSS Ray Reconstruction rebuilds the final image. The goal is to maintain strong visual quality while improving rendering efficiency. NVIDIA has also added support for OpenEXR HDR texture ingestion and HDR skybox processing, helping preserve high-dynamic-range detail throughout the asset pipeline.
One of the most surprising parts of RTX Remix 1.6 is experimental support for Minecraft Java Edition. NVIDIA has introduced a new Fabric-based mod that brings the RTX Remix path-traced renderer to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1.
Unlike traditional RTX Remix projects that rely on intercepting older game rendering pipelines, the Minecraft implementation uses a new API-based rendering approach. This method is designed to improve performance while enabling path-traced lighting, reflections, shadows, and global illumination across Minecraft’s blocky environments.
To showcase the feature, NVIDIA created a physically based rendering texture resource pack and worked with BlockWorks on a custom demonstration map. The result gives Minecraft Java Edition players a new way to experience RTX-style lighting, with more realistic reflections, improved shadows, and more dramatic illumination across scenes.
The Minecraft RTX Remix beta is still in an early stage. NVIDIA notes that compatibility with other Minecraft mods is limited, and some blocks, environments, or gameplay situations may show visual bugs or performance issues. The current version is built specifically for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1, so players should not expect broad version support yet.
RTX Remix 1.6 also improves AI-assisted asset creation with ComfyUI Integration 2.0. This replaces the platform’s older AI asset tools with more flexible workflows for creating and processing textures and meshes. Modders can customize these workflows and decide how generated assets are added to their projects.
The update also includes a headless Toolkit implementation and improved Model Context Protocol integration. These changes make it easier for compatible AI agents to interact with RTX Remix tools and automate parts of the modding process. For creators working on large remastering projects, this could help speed up repetitive tasks and streamline asset production.
Windows on ARM support is another major addition. The RTX Remix Runtime now includes native ARM64 and ARM64EC builds. NVIDIA confirms support for Portal with RTX, the Half-Life 2 RTX Demo, and the Minecraft RTX Remix Beta on compatible Windows on ARM systems, including RTX Spark devices.
RTX Remix 1.6 also brings several performance and usability improvements. The Toolkit now starts faster, the Stage Manager is more responsive, CPU processing overhead for static draw calls has been reduced, and GPU memory allocations are lower when certain rendering features are not being used.
Interestingly, the update includes an optimization that can help AMD GPU users as well. On Windows, RTX Remix now selects the TraceRay implementation by default for AMD graphics cards. NVIDIA cites community-reported performance gains of around 20% in one example, increasing from 53 FPS to 63 FPS with a specific AMD driver. Actual results will vary depending on the game, hardware, driver version, and project settings.
RTX Remix 1.6 also includes a wide range of fixes covering lighting, shadows, reflections, particle systems, texture streaming, and compatibility with older games. The minimum supported NVIDIA driver version has been raised to 616.92.
With DLSS 5, up to 6X Multi Frame Generation, better AI-assisted modding tools, Windows on ARM support, and experimental Minecraft Java Edition path tracing, RTX Remix 1.6 is one of the platform’s most important updates yet. What started as a tool for remastering classic PC games is now expanding into a broader creative platform for bringing advanced real-time graphics to existing titles. For modders, RTX Remix continues to offer a powerful way to reimagine older games with modern lighting, materials, textures, and performance-enhancing AI technologies.
