NVIDIA Releases Critical Security Update to Patch GPU Driver Vulnerabilities and Prevent Data Breaches

Recently, NVIDIA rolled out a critical software security update targeting several vulnerabilities in their GPU display drivers, aiming to shield host systems from potential threats. The latest patch marks a significant stride in safeguarding users by addressing eight security issues, with two classified as high-risk.

One of the high-priority vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-0150) involved a “buffer overflow” issue within the GPU display driver. This flaw posed a significant threat as it could have allowed attackers to overwrite memory buffers, leading to a major system breach. Such a breach could have resulted in personal data being exposed or altered without the user’s knowledge.

The second major vulnerability pertained to the virtual GPU manager, affecting host systems by causing memory corruption. This defect could potentially enable a hostile entity to execute code or manipulate sensitive data, raising serious security concerns.

In addition to these, NVIDIA tackled six other medium-severity vulnerabilities, which, while important, are not elaborated individually here.

To benefit from these crucial security improvements, Windows users are urged to update their drivers to version 553.62 or 539.19. Linux users should ensure they are using version 550.144.03 or 535.230.02, depending on their driver branch. The vulnerabilities affect a wide range of NVIDIA products, including GeForce, RTX, Quadro, NVS, and Tesla, making it imperative for users across these product lines to update promptly for enhanced protection.
