NVIDIA is reportedly considering a shift in its manufacturing strategy by potentially moving away from TSMC’s 2nm process, opting instead for Samsung Foundry. This move is driven by high costs and TSMC’s dominant position in price-setting, which is prompting tech companies to seek alternatives. The rising influence of the Taiwan-based giant is causing NVIDIA and other major tech firms to diversify their 2nm supply sources, exploring options beyond TSMC.
Industry insiders suggest that besides TSMC, Samsung and Japan’s Rapidus are also contenders in the 2nm manufacturing space. However, TSMC currently maintains a lead in terms of yield rates. Despite this advantage, it seems that TSMC could face increased competition as key clients are actively considering expanding their supplier base for next-generation semiconductor processes.
NVIDIA’s potential interest in Samsung Foundry for 2nm production is tempered by past experiences other companies like Qualcomm have had with Samsung’s services. Qualcomm itself is reportedly planning to implement a “dual-source” strategy, incorporating both TSMC and Samsung into their 2nm supply chain. This suggests that the upcoming 2nm node might see a more competitive landscape.
The transition to 2nm technology appears to be progressing at a measured pace. While companies like Apple have postponed their 2nm rollout until 2026, NVIDIA and Qualcomm’s exploration of different suppliers indicates a cautious but deliberate approach to the integration of these advanced nodes into consumer products. However, if Samsung’s 2nm capabilities do not meet expectations, tech companies may ultimately find themselves returning to TSMC to meet their requirements.
