No Man’s Sky Lands on iPhone With 10 Years of Updates Packed Into Less Than 5GB

No Man’s Sky is officially heading to iPhone and iPad, giving Apple users the chance to explore its enormous procedurally generated universe on mobile devices. Hello Games has confirmed that the iOS version will launch on October 28, with pre-orders beginning on October 12 as part of the App Store’s Indie Games Week event. The game will also be free to try at launch, making it easy for new players to jump in before deciding whether to buy.

For fans who have followed No Man’s Sky since its original 2016 release, this mobile version is a major milestone. What began as a challenging internal experiment at Hello Games has become a full mobile adaptation of one of gaming’s most ambitious space exploration titles. Studio founder Sean Murray explained that bringing the game to iPhone and iPad felt almost impossible at first, similar to the challenges the team faced when adapting No Man’s Sky for Nintendo Switch and virtual reality.

The most important detail is that No Man’s Sky on iOS is not a heavily reduced version of the game. Players will be able to explore the same vast universe, complete with more than 40 major updates released over the years. That includes recent content such as COSMOS, as well as major expansions like Voyagers, which added the ability to build large custom starships and helped drive one of the game’s biggest player spikes since launch.

No Man’s Sky has changed dramatically over the past decade. What started as a controversial launch has evolved into one of the most impressive comeback stories in modern gaming. Through years of free updates, Hello Games has added base building, expanded exploration systems, new ships, improved visuals, deeper survival mechanics, space stations, living ships, settlements, expeditions, and much more. Now, much of that content is being packed into a version designed to run on Apple mobile hardware.

However, the iPhone and iPad edition will not include every feature at launch. Multiplayer and settlements will be missing initially, similar to how the Nintendo Switch version launched without certain online features. Murray indicated that these elements could arrive later depending on player feedback and how the mobile version performs after release.

Even with those omissions, the technical achievement is impressive. No Man’s Sky will run on devices as old as the iPhone 11 and 3rd-generation iPad Air, as well as newer models. Hello Games has also worked to keep the file size surprisingly small, with the mobile version coming in at under 5GB. That should make it easier for players to download directly from the App Store without sacrificing too much storage space.

Battery life and device temperature were also major priorities during development. Large open-world games can be demanding on mobile hardware, but Hello Games says it has put significant effort into optimization so players can enjoy longer and more comfortable play sessions on iPhone and iPad.

Controls are another key part of the mobile experience. Instead of simply transferring the console interface to a touchscreen, Hello Games rebuilt the touch controls specifically for iOS. The goal is to make mining, flying, building, scanning, and exploring feel natural on a phone or tablet. Players who prefer physical inputs will also be able to use controllers, while iPad users can take advantage of mouse and keyboard support. The game can also be cast to a TV screen for a larger display experience.

The arrival of No Man’s Sky on iPhone and iPad could introduce the game to a huge new audience. Mobile players will soon be able to discover planets, collect resources, trade goods, upgrade ships, build bases, uncover alien mysteries, and travel across galaxies from the palm of their hand.

With its October 28 launch date, free trial option, compact file size, and support for older Apple devices, No Man’s Sky on iOS is shaping up to be one of the most notable mobile game releases of the year. For longtime fans, it offers another way to explore the universe. For newcomers, it may be the easiest entry point yet into Hello Games’ ever-expanding space adventure.
