Nitecore Unveils Rugged 4,000mAh 18650 Battery Built for All-Weather Power

Nitecore NL1840AW all-weather 18650 battery brings reliable power to extreme cold

Nitecore has introduced the NL1840AW, a new rechargeable 18650 battery designed for users who need dependable power in freezing conditions. While many lithium-ion batteries struggle when temperatures plunge, this new all-weather cell is built to keep devices running in environments where standard batteries can quickly lose performance.

The NL1840AW offers a capacity of 4,000 mAh at 3.7 volts, equal to 14.4 Wh. That makes it a high-capacity option for compatible flashlights, outdoor gear, emergency equipment, and other devices that use the popular 18650 battery format. However, the main highlight is not just its capacity, but its ability to operate in extreme cold.

According to Nitecore, the battery can be used in temperatures as low as -40 °C, or -40 °F. It is also rated for use at altitudes of up to 10,000 meters, or around 33,000 feet. Even in these harsh conditions, the NL1840AW is said to retain around 65 percent of its capacity. This could make it especially useful for winter camping, mountaineering, rescue work, aviation-related use, and other demanding outdoor activities.

Cold weather is one of the biggest challenges for rechargeable batteries. Conventional cells often suffer major capacity loss in freezing temperatures and may require external heating solutions to function properly. The NL1840AW is designed to avoid that problem, allowing users to upgrade compatible devices for cold-weather performance simply by swapping in this specialized battery.

The new cell also supports at least 500 recharge cycles, giving it a practical lifespan for regular use. While some conventional batteries may offer more total cycles under normal conditions, they often cannot deliver the same reliability in extreme cold without additional thermal management.

Durability is another key part of the design. The NL1840AW carries an IPX6 water-resistance rating, helping protect it against powerful water jets and wet outdoor conditions. Nitecore also says the battery includes a pressure relief valve, which is intended to improve safety in the event of rapid temperature changes.

The NL1840AW joins Nitecore’s growing range of cold-resistant power products, including low-temperature battery packs and rugged power banks designed for harsh environments. With this launch, users of 18650-powered gear now have a battery option specifically made for freezing weather and high-altitude use.

The first shipments of the Nitecore NL1840AW have already arrived, with the battery priced at around $30. For hikers, climbers, outdoor workers, and anyone who relies on battery-powered equipment in winter conditions, this all-weather 18650 battery could be a valuable addition to their kit.
