Nitecore has just unveiled its latest addition to the EDC lineup: the EDC31 flashlight. Weighing in at just 100 grams or 3.5 ounces, this model is the lightest in the series, shaving off about 2.5 ounces from its predecessor, the EDC33. The EDC23 Saber, another model in the series, weighs slightly more at 3.6 ounces but comes in a different design.
The EDC31 sticks to the classic flashlight design, setting it apart from some of its peers. It features two high-power modes suited for temporary use. The first is the impressive 3,500-lumen “Lumin Shield” floodlight mode, while the second is a 1,500-lumen spotlight mode. Activating these modes is straightforward: a half-press on the button engages the spotlight, whereas a full press triggers the floodlight.
One standout feature of the EDC31 is its ability to operate effectively even with a low battery, providing an edge over competing brands. This characteristic is shared with other models in the EDC3x series, such as the EDC33 and EDC35. While it’s expected that the flashlight will generate significant heat, even when not at full brightness, its compact size is a plus.
The flashlight’s continuous light modes come with a detailed battery life guide. At 1,100 lumens on “high,” the battery life is around four hours. Adjusting to lower settings increases longevity: 300 lumens offer five hours, 70 lumens extends use to 24 hours, and a mere 5 lumens allows for an impressive 57 hours of light.
In spotlight mode, the beam is more focused, while the floodlight mode utilizes additional LEDs. However, the EDC31 carries a known drawback: its non-removable battery. Using a standard 18650 battery, Nitecore has not disclosed specific voltage details, but estimates suggest a capacity between 3,800 mAh and 4,000 mAh.
Charging is made easy with a USB-C port guarded by a protective cover, but unlike its predecessors, the EDC31 lacks a rotating mechanism. A lockout switch prevents accidental activation, ensuring it doesn’t light up unintentionally in a bag. The flashlight’s robust design allows it to withstand water immersion up to 6.5 feet.
While Nitecore has yet to announce the EDC31’s price, it’s anticipated to be slightly more affordable than the EDC33, which is priced at $69.95. Keep an eye out for this new flashlight that promises to be an efficient and durable companion for your everyday carry needs.
