The highly anticipated Donkey Kong Bananza is set to make a splash on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025. However, developers have acknowledged some performance issues with the game, particularly when tackling dense environments or intense on-screen action.
In an interview, Kazuya Takahashi, the director of Donkey Kong Bananza, candidly discussed these challenges. He noted, “We are aware that in some moments with a lot of explosions, the performance may drop a little.” Despite these hiccups, the team is dedicated to ensuring players have a fun and engaging experience, emphasizing that gameplay triumphs over perfect performance.
One of the game’s standout features is its vast destructible environments, powered by voxel-based technology. While this tech allows for remarkable environmental interactions, it can strain the hardware, especially given the Nintendo Switch 2’s specifications. The custom Nvidia Tegra T239 SoC used in the console does support advanced AI-sharpening, but the voxel-driven destruction can still lead to occasional performance dips.
To enhance the gaming experience, the developers have implemented hit stops and slow-motion effects, which are deliberately designed to highlight significant impacts. Takahashi explained, “Some visual effects like slow motion are intentional to emphasize impacts.”
Early player impressions indicate that Donkey Kong Bananza generally runs smoothly, despite some frame rate drops during explosive sequences. The development of this game began back in 2017, right after the release of Super Mario Odyssey. Originally planned for the first Switch, the transition to the Nintendo Switch 2 allowed the team to incorporate innovative voxel technology.
Donkey Kong Bananza is slated for release on July 17, 2025. It promises to build on the sandbox-style level design, 3D platforming, and the immersive gameplay mechanics that fans enjoyed in Super Mario Odyssey.
